In college I absolutely started being an a-hole probably my sophomore year. It worked but once I just started being myself instead of trying to be nice or an a-hole, I was more successful.

To answer your question though, "Nice Guys" are usually the dudes who bitch and moan about not being able to get women to like them. "I have sooooo much to give, why don't people just SEE IT?" So they'll become friends with women and keep saying to themselves "OMG, they'll see how good a person I am and eventually want to be with me." That's inherently not a nice thing. You are fricking manipulating people.
