One of my cars has had nitrogen in the tires for three years and I have not had to touch them. My other car has regular air and every time the temperature gets cool I have to add air. It’s more convenient for me with the nitrogen. I realize that nitrogen except most of the atmosphere

How much do those scam places charge you for nitrogen filled tires? Just FYI- 100 cubic feet on nitrogen costs about 50 cents so you can do the math and see how much you are getting screwed

Nitrogen is definitely more convenient. I never worry about checking my air pressure. I just have them top the nitorgen when I rotate tires.

I’m not sure about nitrogen. I put helium in mine.

Same here. I feel it helps cut down on unsprung weight.

I have been using premium since getting my latest ride because the owner's manual says 89 or 91, can't remember.

Am I pissing away $0.40/gal on the higher octane fuel?

You should use what is labeled under your cas cap. Too lean or rich a mixture can cause issues.

Is there any type of at home setup you can buy to refill your tires with nitrogen?

unless you drive nascar at 180 mph, where a 2 degree tire temperature difference can cost you the race, then its snake oil

its the new "special protective finish coating" dealers charge you $1k extra on the price for just waxing your car.

regular air (oxygen) is something like 80% nitrogen and they just filter out the carbon dioxide then bottle it.

I use Fluorine. Totally Hilarious when the mechanic's face burns off while checking my tires.

Oxygen will diffuse out the tire marginally faster than nitrogen.

The big reason to use Nitrogen is that it is dry. It's the water vapor that drives your pressure change with temperature. And it'll do a little corrosion on your valves.

I’ve been using a mixture of 78% Nitrogen, 21% Oxygen and 1% Argon for years with no problem.

You sir know nothing about how nitrogen is bottled.

Yes.

You can get a tank of nitrogen and a regulator.

To me it seems a waste.
The air is mostly nitrogen anyway.
I have nitrogen for inert gas pressure testing but never put it in tires.

Lean and rich refer to fuel/air mixture not octane.

So you're saying Nitrogen doesn't obey pV = nRT?

I have not touched them since the car was purchased new in 2014

No need to get all sciency on me. Just stating a couple of times a year, I add air to my car tires. The wife’s car came with the nitrogen and I have not had to add air to any of the tires. I probably would not have paid extra for it and haven’t felt the need to change mine.

A buddy of mine is a service director at a major dealership in DFW, and he told me the "free Nitrogen for life" upgrade for new car buyers was the easiest money and the biggest scam their dealership made.

I'm curious why he is wrong. The nitrog3n tire compressors sort of do just that.

quote:

Membrane technology with nitrogengenerators uses compressed air forced through a polymeric hollow fiber to selectively permeate oxygen, water vapor, and other impurities out of its side walls while allowingnitrogen to flow through its center and emerge as high purity N2 gas.

Neon is the only way to go. As the tires heat up the gas changes color. Looks pretty cool.
