Nighttime mouth-guards for tmj

My kid was told by a dentist that she should wear one. They want to charge 1300 !!!! Other places want 800!!! Online, I see many over the counter versions that are highly rated by lots of people from as low as $30 and as high as $200.
I see many sites claim that insurance will not pay for it because it is simply not necessary to pay that price for such a simple item.
I dunno...
Anyone here have any experience with this? Any insight?

That goes for just about everything insurance is supposed to cover.

Money hungry jk
But seriously.. how old is your child? Is the dentist recommending the guard for excessive tooth wear; or is your child having jaw pain and/or clicking/popping? If the latter, was a thorough history collected and exam of the jaw joint and muscles done?
Night guards are fine for adults with excessive wear and grinding but most dentists are too quick to jump to them for true TMJ disorders.

My dentist had one custom made for me a few years ago. Not for tmj but for grinding teeth while asleep. Mine cost around $300.

Is having a daughter with TMJ a blessing or a curse?
Did they tell that joke back in 2004?

I have one that cost $400 from my dentist. I seem to grind my teeth when sleeping. Insurance covered most of it.

My first one was about 300, dog ate it. 2nd one was like 350, and has lasted almost a decade. I grind my teeth bad, so it cuts down on those delightful headaches.

Just go to Walmart or Walgreens and get 2 for $15. They work just as well as the dentist's.

Which is why I never got one from the dentist. I have tried all of the OTC ones and they didn't work worth a shite.

I chew through one about every six months.
I use Wilson mouth guards (adult sized).
They work well, fit to form and are about a dollar each at your local Walmart.
I also cut them down a good bit for comfort.
ETA: Wilson as in football mouth guards. Found in sporting section.

if this is to prevent grinding, i wear one. my dentist told me to buy a mouth guard from academy for $15 and use that. much cheaper than getting a custom one and serves the same purpose

Yes, I use it to prevent grinding.
My dentist said it was absolutely fine to use the football guards.

Theres a difference between a nighttime mouthguard and a splint for TMJ.
If its to treat TMJ, the dentist isn't charging you 1300 for the appliance, its for his time and appointments to properly diagnose the cause and adjust the splint as the muscles relax. Also, if its for TMJ, an ill-fitting splint, or a soft football guard will often make the muscles more hyperactive and increase pain.
If its just a nightguard to protect from grinding, he can make that in office for pretty cheap (couple hundred bucks). Or, in this case, you can get one from the store and see if it works before investing in a custom made one if you choose to do so.
I really dont think the Dr. is trying to screw you over, just seems like he/she didnt do an adequate job explaining things.
