In terms of suburbs, they are hideously ugly compared to other large metro suburbs like Atlanta, Nashville, and Birmingham. Metairie and the Westbank is just ugly and old janky looking, and their public schools still suck unlike the other suburb metros listed above
And the proximity of those nice pockets still comes with the issues during daily life for things like dry cleaning, doctor appointments, grocery shopping, etc.
Like the example above of English Turn, many of those residents are going to Belle Chasse so they don't have to deal with Orleans Parish for those types of things.

Seems like another feelgood appt by an inept mayor who is more concerned with 1st's than actual results.
Good news is that since it is an interim appt then the council will have some say in who gets appt'd.

The only “pretty” area in the actual city is uptown, and it certainly isn’t safe or isolated from the crime
Being pretty is relative and largely dependent on region, but there are neighborhoods all throughout uptown, mid city and lakeview that are overwhelmingly safe.
Don’t really care for the suburbs but they are viable for people that want that life. For someone that bragged about living in river ridge and wanting to live in Madisonville, I know you are aware of this

"Overwhelmingly safe" compared to the ninth ward? Sure.
But, otherwise? That's total bs.
Just recently heard about a family member uptown who had her car window shattered. Just yesterday there was that highly-publicized murder in mid city.
There's nowhere in New Orleans besides Audubon Place that is "overwhelmingly safe".

I get it. No neighborhood is safe were some random isolated crime accured
Posted on 1/1/23 at 4:14 pm to Lester Earl
Define overwhelmingly safe. I’ve had multiple friends in Lakeview have their windows bashed out. Also there was the old man watering his lawn that was robbed of his keys when the perpetrator slipped.
The head of PANO was on Newell recently saying that proactive policing is non existent in NOLA. 1) they are too short staffed. 2) if they engage with these scholars they aren’t guaranteed back up.

I mean, a broken window is a pain in the butt and shouldn’t happen but in a discussion about weather safe, it’s ridiculous to place those two incidents side by side.

Same PANO lead that wants to put all the blame on the DA and has a dozen of his men under federal investigation for not doing their job.

The Nola suburbs are “viable”. They are ugly, old, and have bad public schools. Mandeville is the only suburb that can even come relatively close to others, but it’s losing its “suburb” title because it’s pretty much self sufficient of Nola now
Compare Metairie/Westbank to Decatur or Brentwood or mountain brook or Franklin or Alpharetta , it’s horrible
Nola is just fine for a party weekend or The Peter Pan lifestyle, there is a reason it doesn’t have the growth of the other large southern metro areas

Metairie Club Gardens is safe and very nice.

The growth of the suburbs here is stagnant because there isn’t any more room to expand it. Unlike those other places. It’s recycled crap with safe neighborhoods & decent infrastructure.

Not saying PANO is great, but if you are honest, you know there is not proactive policing going on. Also you had an officer quit mid shift on a Friday night because he knew he had no back up.
I’m not trying to shite on NOLA. I lived Uptown for 10 years-2 blocks off of Magazine, 2 blocks off of Prytania, 2 blocks off of Napoleon. We loved it. But it was really expensive and every house around ours was broken into. I think ours wasn’t because we had two big dogs. Our across the street neighbor was a Cardiology fellow at Ochsner. When his place was burglarized he waited over eight hours for NOPD-and this was before things got really bad.

NOPD has it's issues. Leadership, ranks, and those who have left.
His members are why we are under the consent decree and why the NOPD outlook is so bleak. Have never once heard him take any part of the blame.
Newell has his moments, but he has never pressed Glasser.

Not disagreeing. But when is the reset? Is the appointment of people to the top cop position who aren’t qualified and capable of leading acceptable? When does the citizenship of the City cry enough? Stating well broken in car windows is no big deal is like a battered woman saying well he only beats my arse on Fridays.

I would argue Old Metairie is one of the prettiest areas in the state. Public schools suck, but that’s an issue across the state. Even if I moved to the Northshore my kid isn’t going to Mandeville high. Everyone I know who has their kids in public schools on the Northshore complains about how they’re getting and is considering St. Paul’s for high school.

I would say the moves by the council are evidence that the people are speaking and want more accountability.
Don't think anyone is ignoring the broken windows, quite the opposite. Read any social media posts to see that the city is fed up with it. Saying that these 8-10 broken windows are proof the city is irreparable is probably the other end of the spectrum though.
There are posts today tagging people who posted themselves online firing guns into the air on Mardi Gras. Tagging the NOPD along with them. The citizens are pushing back, but the NOPD is what it is.

The inability to really sprawl (outside of the Northshore, I guess) has sort of been a blessing and a curse for greater NOLA. I actually like the fact that it’s kept the whole place rather geographically compact. It does create some challenges for making it a viable city in the 21st century.

people have stuff stolen and broken into every night there. There’s a reason some residents put the flashing blue and red lights up on their house - the same ones the police put in the worst areas of town to deter crime (which is obviously working well).

What is bad is that the game was at 11 a.m., so likely cards were damaged before it got dark.
In other news, cars are ALWAYS vandalized at surface lots like the Riverwalk where there is overflow (and cheaper) cruise port parking.
