New Parents Face Six Years of Sleep Deprivation

Starting a family is a well-known way to make a good night’s sleep a distant dream, but new research suggests the parental yawns might go on for six years.
Researchers tracking the sleep of thousands of men and women as their family size increased have found that shuteye hits a low about three months after birth – with the effect strongest in women.

Strikingly, the team found the impact of the first child lingered for both parents. Even once the impact of subsequent children was taken into account, women were still relatively sleep deprived, both in terms of quality and quantity, four to six years after their first child’s birth. Overall sleep satisfaction was rated just over one point lower on average, while sleep duration was about 25 minutes less.

The mothers also lost about 40 minutes of sleep a night in the year after a baby arrived compared with pre-pregnancy levels regardless of whether it was their first or a subsequent child.
quote:
While similar trends were seen for fathers, the effects were less pronounced. Even at three months after their first child’s birth, fathers only lost 13 minutes of sleep.

My daughter woke us up during the night for about the first 3 months and at 6 months was sleeping until 9-10am. Lucked up I guess.

Checking in to say that my 3 month old is currently passed out whie I’m drinking beer and watching the LSU game on my couch.
He’s slept through the night the last 2 nights and when he does wake up at night it’s usually just once.
Early sleep training FTW

What tard approved a research study to determine having kids = less sleep?

A lot of that loss is by choice. It used to make me so mad when my wife would wake up for the kids when it was my turn or if I was already up with them or if she wouldn’t nap when I was home and awake.
We got it down now, within 2 years both kids sleep 8-10 hours. My wife falls asleep right after they do.
Also, it’s factual proven science that you cannot “make up” missed hours of sleep. However, 8 hours straight is 8 hours straight no matter the time of day.

I'll never forget the first night my daughter slept through the night.
Wife (at 4AM nudges me): Hey, the baby isn't awake!
Me (sleepily): Yeah, isn't that great?
Wife: Do you think she's dead?
Me (rolling over): Well if she is, she'll still be dead in a couple of hours.....

Sad thing is Bill wouldn’t dare say that shite now with his wife. Oh how the mighty have fallen.

I'm going to regret jinxing it, but my 3 month old has been sleeping 10-12 hours a night for a month now. The first 7/8 weeks were brutal though.
I'm just relishing it anticipating shite going sideways any day now.
