New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell and her husband Jason owe more than $95,000 to the IRS for unpaid taxes, according to a liens filed against her Broadmoor home.
The current liens date back to 2013. The IRS put a liens on Cantrell’s home in 2018 for about $43,000 for taxes owed from 2013-15 according to NOLA.com/The New Orleans Advocate. Then, in 2019, another lien was filed for $31,000 in unpaid taxes from 2017. Earlier this month, the IRS filed another lien for about $19,400 in unpaid taxes from 2018.

In brief remarks about the debt, Cantrell said she and her husband are working with a tax attorney to dispute many of the charges. She also said they had paid $60,000 toward the debt over the course of two years, though she did not say how much she currently owes or how much she had originally underpaid.
“I believe I’ve given you enough information,” Cantrell said as she briefly answered questions following a news conference about road work in New Orleans East. “I don’t anticipate or expect to go into that level of detail especially when it’s so complicated and you don’t have the information.”
quote:
“I will say to the people of this city they have a mayor who really gets it and is dealing with challenges and difficulties her own self, and at the same time doing what it takes to deal with the needs of people,” she said.

What we need is a back tax forgiveness program.

720 million dollar budget and Latoya Da Destroya and her attorney husband get their taxes wrong every year, always underpaying. I'll bet it gets settled with a check that has the name Kailas.

Couldn’t she just use the Hard Rock $$$$ to pay most of that?
She should call the Bryson Law Firm and sort that out.

IRS is racist. Expecting a black mayor to pay her taxes

What makes this worse is that she is a salaried employee and he has a one man defense law practice whose finances should not be that complex. In some of the the years he was a salaried public defender. They own one home in Broadmoor and no rental property or other businesses. There are citizens whose water bills have become more complex than her taxes.

At first I assumed this was the same stuff from 2017-18 we heard about. Honestly, amazed it’s new and she let it so immediately happen again. Her money situation is red flags galore.

I had the displeasure to work against her husband in court many times. How he escaped a legitimate punishment from the Bar association for bringing dope into his daddy's courtroom disgusts me.

Does the IRS take credit cards?

He came from that high powered law school at Southern. And dollars to donuts he was delivering a joint to a client. He should have been tried for the offense. If folks want to legalize marijuana, good for them. But it says a lot about the integrity and ethics of an attorney if he is willing to bring an illegal substance into the court house.
