This is a New Orleans thread. Go start a thread with each other city you are concerned for.

Those are metro numbers. Metro is currently 990k.

We should get a daily NOLA thread like the GMT so everyone can virtue signal about not going there ever again.
My only point was that people are willing to live in a collapsing house if they have their reasons.

Thus the reason I will move out of this garbage state when my kids get to college.
I am one of those people that can be blamed for this. I voted Demcorat for the better part of my adult years. I was part of the problem. I'm also smart enough to admit and recognize where all this is going.
This entire state has been run by one party at almost every level for 90+% of its existence.

I just Googled New Orleans. I did not put in metro. When adding metro, it kicks it up to 1,045,809.

I'm with you. In NOLA until I don't have to be. There are a lot of people in the city that have to be here and would love to see things change.
It's hard to vote for a Republican when the Republicans won't even run a legitimate candidate.

Absolutely.....but, doesn't change the fact that parts of the city are damn near a 3rd world country.

You can find official census numbers for the city proper pretty easily. Wikipedia has them. 1960 was the peak population for the city proper.
quote:
1930 458,762 +18.5%
1940 494,537 +7.8%
1950 570,445 +15.3%
1960 627,525 +10.0%
1970 593,471 -5.4%
1980 557,515 -6.1%
1990 496,938 -10.9%
2000 484,674 -2.5%
2010 343,829 -29.1%
2020 383,997 +11.7%

Dude. We can’t get our garbage picked up correctly. We have tire junkyards just taking up streets.
Roving gangs of thugs with guns just taking over intersections in broad daylight.
Carjackings and car breakins going wild.
We are likely to have double the murders in 2022 that we did in 2019.
We are about to have HALF the amount of police officers recommended. Half.
I don’t give a rats arse what happened in 1985 or 1995.
After years of doing slightly better this city is having issues at the lowest level to the highest. It is devolving into borderline chaos.
Teedy, Jason Williams, Avegno, Covid and Ida have fricked this city to death.

I'm not disagreeing with you on any of that. Not defending any of it.
New Orleans certainly has many more issues than most of Louisiana; but it isn't some oddity.

I fixed the post I made with more accurate census numbers. My point still remains valid, however, that a flat number of murders juxtaposed with a declining population results in a significantly higher murder rate. It just only doubled instead of tripled.
If there were roughly 300 murders in 1994, and 218 in 2022, then the murder rate today is only down roughly 8% from NOLA’s deadliest period. NOLA is on pace to well eclipse that this year.

This whole 'smart cities' debacle going on is a pretty bad look for Cantrell too

I would go out on a limb and say that the community in which the majority of murders are committed has ebbed and flowed to keep the murder rate consistent
