New house- sulfur smell to the water.

Just became a home owner, and we are thrilled except for one little detail- the water has a horrible sulfur smell. The BR water site says this is relatively normal, but it is not going away as fast as I'd hoped. Anyone have any experience with this? Anything we can do to make the smell go away?

It just takes time getting used to The crazy soft water. This happened to me in 2001 when I moved to BR for LSU.

Water filter. Not just the kind you put on the faucet but a whole home filter. You can buy good ones fairly reasonable on eBay and they're easy to hook up to your system.

I have this where I live too. Whole home filter helps but doesn't resolve. Eventually you don't even notice it. It's worse with hot water

How old is the house's hot water heater? My house had that smell too. As soon as I changed the hot water heater, it went away for good.

If it's hot water then you need a new sacrificial anode in your water heater.
If it's cold water that smells you are in trouble.

It's only a $20 part to fix that smell in hot water.
Very simple fix. Turn water supply off to heater, remove old anode, install new one.
Super simple.

We drank bottled water when we lived in Youngsville. Horrible egg smell in certain faucets (weird). Shower was fine.

If you're in Baton Rouge, you shouldn't be getting a sulfur smell. I'd look into the hot water heater. Run some hot water and see if it smells. Then run the cold water until all the hot water you were just running is out of the pipes. Check.

well and septic or city water?
first, get a whole house filter....install right where the pipe comes in [ at least close by ]
next, get a 2 stage or 3 stage under counter filter
and add that inline after the whole house filter.
the advantage is, now the whole house is done and you don't have to refit under the counter and other locations

but the filters will still be useful for cleaning up the water just the same. about 50 dollars a year to change filters...not bad
we got city water here, but only drink the filtered water...your choice.

My mom has a big whole home filter outside her house. It's two cylinders that are around 3ft tall and 6" ID. IIRC, it was like $2k installed and the parts were the expensive thing. The company also comes to check on it every 6 months

Had same problem after being on vacation and no water used for 2 wks. Google search reveled sevral potential problems. Turned out to be temp to low. Turned water off, depressured heater, removed anode, 1 gal clrox, let sit 1 hr, flush thru all faucets, drain tank, repeat process. Filled tank fresh water, reset thermostat to 130. Never another problem.

the whole home filter , usually keep the large clunkers out of the water...it doesn't do a serious job on the lead and cryptosporidium and the usual junk.
the under counter [ or otherwise installed , paper/carbon/etc ] are still needed to improve flavor and other issues not cleaned up by the city.

I know it was a cheap fix, but we added on and remodeled so we upgraded to tankless.
We noticed it was stronger when we came back from vacation and the water sat in the hot water heater for a longer period of time

Once stayed at a cheap motel in Arkansas near Daisy State Park. Sulphur in water would gag you. Could not brush my teeth without almost hurling. Actually drove to the park to shower in the campground.. Never experienced anything like it.
