Honda paint now is what Ford paint was in the early nineties. You will get that nasty clear coat residue look. And chipping. But you will also get 200,000 miles on the stock drivetrain.

This is true. Had issues with my '93 Bronco's paint, and my parents just rolled over 200k on an ' 01 Odyseey.

Why would you wax clear coat?

Are the base Mazdas still made by Ford? I know Ford owned a stake in Mazda.

No, they broke away from Ford a few years ago, and have since tried to revamp their image.

You don't wax your car?

No. Waxing hurts clear coating. The wax never touches paint...no use for wax anymore.

Easily the Sonata. Better looking car and more bang for the buck.

Hyundai is the easy choice here. One of the best values on the road right now.

Anecdotally, after having my car repainted by Honda the service manager said it needed to be waxed once the paint fully cured in a few weeks to protect the new clear coat.

Waxing any paint, clear coat included, makes it harder for contaminants to damage the surface. It also makes the car easier to clean. It may have some benefit for oxidation and fading, but with new paints, this is unlikely.

That said, nothing you do is going to help Honda's crappy paint.

And you work at a dealership right? Holy shite! This is why I never let the dealer wash my car.

This is the best advice given. I like to buy nice cars that are about one or two years old with about 20k to 30k miles on them.

Currently driving a 2012 Acura TL and I love it. Still has factory warranty (not that I'll need it) and it is absolutely loaded with luxury features and a ridiculous sound system.

Anyway I saved about 12 grand by buying a one year old car (bought it last summer) that if I didn't look at the odometer I would have no idea it was used (when I bought it and people rode in it I didn't say anything and everyone assumed it was new).

well, since the OP did not ask this i'll one up you and say Toyota way over Honda.
In almost every department besides ascetics for most of the model lines.

Paint
Interior
Powertrain

All superior over anything Honda has to offer.

Thanks for the help. I had also been looking at the Honda CR-V, but it just doesn't get the mpg I want. I can get a much better price on the Sonata due to all of their incentives, probably $3000 cheaper than the CX-5.

Also, check crash ratings via IIHS website.

FWIW, the CX-5 was ranked higher than Honda's CR-V

Yeah, that's what I thought.

Honda Pilot gets a poor ranking as well.
