Can you elaborate on this, considering they are both in the midsize sedan market?
Sonata vs. Mazda6

We are getting a Hyundai Sante Fe Sport. Never thought I would see the day when a Hyundai would be parked in my garage.

and a Mazda is better how?
If anything the two companies are going polar opposite of each other.
Mazda used to make a decent little vehicle . Now not so much.
Hyundai/Kia are making a better looking, better riding and more fuel efficient and reliable vehicle than anything Mazda has to offer now.
one look at KBB Used car values will show you this.

Honda. And its not even close.
My family has owned several Hondas, including my 7 year old Civic. The thing I have noticed is that engine will far outlast the rest of your car. One of the biggest problems being the paint. Good luck getting Honda to fix stuff like that too. They held my car for two months last year, only agreed to cover a portion of the clear coat damage, and wouldn't let me negotiate to have anything else painted out of my pocket while the car was in the shop. Now I have half a car with good paint on top, and bumpers and mirrors all pocked up with rock chips and crows feet.

Oh, it isn't. They both suck.
But I guess when you're an OT poor your choices are limited
While in that same realm of cars, that Kia that Blake Griffin jumps over is a pretty good looking vehicle. I'd go with that.

Is the color a must? I have nothing against the Hyundai, but the silver/blue color very much looks like a discount manufacturer's color. Maybe it's just burnt into my brain from seeing so many Hyundais and rental Hyundais in that color, but it just looks sort of cheap to me.

This is false. Mazda did a complete redesign of their fleet.
The biggest disadvantage is that they no longer offer a V6 in the Mazda 6.

Get the Sonata. I have several friends who have Hyundai's and they're a lot better than they used to be. Good gas mileage too.

No, you aren't "changing the game". Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Honda makes solid cars, but they can't seem to get clear coats right.

Hyundai's are much better built than Mazda

The paint is a real issue
I also kept my car clean , and tried to wax it every few months. Hondas have a paint thickness issue that leads to chipping and pealing. Also, the problem is thought to be worse on the hood because of the added engine heat.

I like the Mazdas looks but id personally look at the Ford Edge for that category
Posted on 7/28/14 at 10:47 am to Bmath
Honda paint now is what Ford paint was in the early nineties. You will get that nasty clear coat residue look.
And chipping. But you will also get 200,000 miles on the stock drivetrain.

Are the base Mazdas still made by Ford?
I know Ford owned a stake in Mazda.

Go with the Hyundai. I got a Genesis Coupe and love it and the 10 year/100,000 mile warranty.

Everybody (with the exception of Rover) builds a pretty reliable vehicle now.
Separators are NVH, accessories (user interface), and interior appointments.
