I think you may be confused

Study what you are interested in, employment will work itself out. You're better off being an interesting person driven by passion.

I never got a job in the field of my engineering masters but it's helped me land every job I've gotten.

Not only that, but the state is building it to be an exportable commodity. Sea levels are rising (not getting into that debate, but they are), and coastal engineering will become a huge industry.

When I was doing my undergrad in CE at LSU I knew I wanted to do water resources. I scheduled all my electives with the water background in mind. In doing so I only needed to take 1 extra class to get an Environmental Minor. When I got out I basically had 3 potental employers tell me they didn't care about the environmental minor. As long as I had the foundation in water resourses. They were more interested in getting me experience to get my PE as fast as I can. Were less concerned with post graduate degree to be totally honest. That was 12 years ago so things may have changed.

I guess what I am saying is, do what you enjoy it will work itself out.

I beleive this new master's program is being developed in conjunction with the new Water Institute of the Gulf being constructed around the old city docks in BR.

Its going to be a pretty significant research center for coastal preservation and restoration with a $50 million dollar initial investment. The first phase will develop the main research center literraly on the docks, out over the river, a $9 million dollar office building, and 50,000 square foot building that will contain a to-scale model of the southern portion of the Mississippi River.

you wont have a hard time finding a job. that being said, you wont have a hard time doing coastal work with just a BS either. I know 3 guys who completed that program:2 are hydraulic modelers and one works in a totally different industry. In my professional opinion, if you find a great company to hire on with after your BS, you will learn in your 4 yrs before PE what you would have getting the MS, but with more practical applications and jobs on your resume.

PE is still a bigger deal than MS in the coastal eng. world UNLESS you want to be a hydraulic modeler (ADCIRC, ST WAVE, DELFT3D etc.). If you are more interested in project management --> PE.
