He certainly hates religion.
He doesn't seem like the kind of person that's really into hate all that much.

I have no idea who this is, but I sure have been seeing a lot of people (yes, hipsters) posting his name around recently.

How a man that smart, who witnesses the wonders of the universe on a daily basis, can actually proclaim there is no God is beyond me.

I'm a fan. Unfortunately can't make it to Tulane tomorrow. Maybe someone will post it on Youtube.

I don't think he proclaims that there is no God. He's agnostic, which is a difference, compared to asshats like Dawkins.

Dawkin's "The God Delusion" is a best seller. He brings out some interesting points.
Anybody else here going to see Tyson?

So is the Bible. Does that fact lend it credence?

He doesn't claim there isn't a god, he just doesn't see how, in the wonderful universe he observes on a daily basis, there is a petty god who cares whether creatures on one planet have premarital sex

I'd like everyone to take note how and why simple threads like this get derailed. Before some revisionist gets in here and starts claiming mean old atheists turned this into a religious thread, take note at how it turned into a debate about religion. Nothing about the original post said anything about religion, and Tyson may very well be one of the least outspoken science "popularizer" when it comes to his own religious feelings...but why would that stop someone who's gotten their panties in a wad by perceived slights by COSMOS? But since this type of thread derailment is coming from the majority opinion side, it's a-ok.

There's a huge difference between believing in God and believing in a religion.

And I would argue that is what makes him so great, that in the vast expansive universe, that he cares about YOU and what happens to you.
But people, just like his logic, write off that love because of some adversity like hurricanes or earthquakes is beyond ridiculous. I would argue those are people who just don't want or want to recognize Him in the first place.

That's pretty poor logic if that's why he doesn't believe in God. I'm not trying to convince you or him to believe in God, but just thinking that an omnipotent God wouldn't care about "petty" issues isn't really a good logical reason not to believe in God. Maybe it's a logical reason to believe that God doesn't care about petty issues, but to dismiss belief in God because of that thought process doesn't make sense.

He's an agnostic, not an atheist, and its not something he talks about constantly. He pretty rarely brings it up, actually.

I would like to know what reason could anyone give for not believing in God that believers would accept and say "Well you do have a point there."
