How much can I expect to be able to negotiate down on new vehicle price? What about a used vehicle price or on my trade in? Thanks in advance

If only there was a famous post here about negotiating a vehicle purchase...

Truly depends on your negotiating skills, what you can or will tolerate, i.e. the power to leave and what type of vehicle you are buying (supply vs. demand, premium vs. non-premium, etc.).

Don't tell them you have a trade in until you settle in writing on the price of the vehicle you are looking to purchase. These are separate transactions and should be treated as such.

I'm just here waiting for S's comment.

If you're looking for a new vehicle, get a Costco membership if you don't already have one. You'll get GM Supplier Discount, Ford X-Plan, and whatever the other MFG's programs are called. I hear you can negotiate better deals if you're really good at it, but this is a shortcut to save some time & money.

More info would be helpful. What type of vehicle?
If its a new car, then for most vehicles you should be able to get them somewhere $500-1000 over invoice. If its a high performance, high demand, limited production vehicle/trim level then you probably won't get them to knock nearly as much off sticker.
You can lookup the Kelly Blue Book and NADA trade-in values online so you know what you should expect to get on your trade-in.

Any salesman with half a brain will ask you if you have a trade.

Of course they will. It's one of the first questions they ask.
But you don't have to answer it. A simple redirect such as, "I'm more focused on the price of the new vehicle" or "I haven't really given it much thought" works well. They aren't trained to ask second or third level questions.

I can only offer one tip.
If you are trading something in, do not even hint/propose until AFTER you've negotiated price. Don't let the salesman even know you are considering trading in.

Quite the conundrum. I'll ask my agent if he has any tips and I'll get back to you.

Just remember, they always fear the walk out.

I've literally had a manager tell me, "we dont want you to leave,we know 80% of people that leave dont come back, what will it take to get you i. this car?" I still left since we wanted to look at a different make/model no matter what. Didn't tell them anything I wanted to sweeten the deal. I got 5 calls while at the other dealership with them tripping over themselves to offer me stuff. ended up with a much nicer package vehicle than we were initially looking at and 3k more on the trade. I learned 2 things.....be willing to walk out, and let them make the offers. I would have never asked for what they offered and could have left a lot on the table.

Go to cargurus.com and search nationally for the exact car you want. Get the lowest listed price nationally and print it out. Walk in your dealership and tell them I'll pay this much plus the price of an airplane ticket. If they say no buy the ticket and fly to pick up your new ride.
I think it's worth it. For instance, price Jeeps at Koon Jeep in Alexandria VA compared to anywhere else.
