Are you talking good quality brand name shirts, or random button up shirts from Walmart or Tractor Supply?
For good quality basic staples, no need to throw them out unless they have features that are out of style (like collars from last century to give an example that was already posted). If you have too many, just keep the ones you like that fit well.
Anything you're unsure of, if you're married ask your wife. It's in our job description to make sure y'all look presentable when y'all leave the house.
For new stuff, I'd suggest somewhere with a large selection like Macy's. Go during a slow time and if the salesperson seems chill, ask for recommendations based on what you like. I did that with my husband a few months ago, and it was actually kinda fun (like most men, he hates clothes shopping). That nice lady was running all over the department trying to help us find shirts he might like. He got a few nice shirts, some slightly outside of his comfort zone, that he gets compliments on when he wears.
As for t-shits, I just did a big purge of mine a few weeks ago. Anything old but sentimental, I cut out the design and put it in a box that I keep in the attic. Sure, the kids will have to throw it out someday, but one more box for the dump isn't going to kill them. I don't feel like I'm throwing away memories, and they're no longer taking up prime closet/ drawer real estate. But that's a chick thing that I wouldn't expect a baw to do. My husband uses his rejects to wear during messy projects or for shop rags.

I used to think there was no harm in buying new stuff cause I assumed goodwill was helping the poor.
I didn’t realize my used clothes were going to stack up on some pristine beach in a 3rd world country in Africa. I’m trying to buy less now but it is hard.

As a Florida fan you must never get rid of the jorts.

I keep a trash bag in the corner of the closet. If I add something new, I find an item I rarely if ever wear and throw it in the bag to keep things from piling up. Once the bag's full I donate it and start over again.

I'm with Lemmy from Liverpool
Two year rule outside of suits etc
If you have not worn it for two seasons (two years) it goes

That's not a bad idea at all.

Same here except I was in an XXL shirt size, albeit a tad loose, and a 38 pants size to now an XL shirt and 36 pants size. Therefore, I’m donating my larger sized clothing to a Christian Center that gives the clothes to families in need. These are some custom tailored button downs and business casual and casual slacks.
I encourage you to find such a distribution center for your donations.

Ask your boyfriend what you should do.

I need to do the same. I found a Polaroid of new and some friends at Mardi Gras '00. I was wearing this Nautica button up. That thing is still in my closet right now. I have 5 suits I need to get trimmed down as they were big years ago now lol like zoot suits.
I have two closets pretty much everything in the walk in I can get rid of.

If you haven't worn in in 2 years ditch it.
If it has holes or stains that won't come out, ditch it.

For some reason, I was convinced pleated dress pants was the way to go in 2005.
They were and still should be.
And take off those gotdamm tennis shoe soled loafers as you get off my lawn.

Aside from suits and dress shirts, donate anything not worn in 2 years.*

Oof, J&M was a massive turn off even in my 20s. Their fabric weaves were so tight and hot, and you're selling this stuff in the South?
I'm fortunate that I've been in consulting for 20 years and can wear the same 15 shirts to the same client for six weeks and nobody will notice. (Why I have 40 button downs, nobody knows.)
But back to all the people that DV me, Goodwill will put your $65 Brooks Brothers shirt on the rack for $5. I get that it's not worth near what I paid for it, but some dude is going to do lawn work in it. It's not worth me spending $15 in tolls to drop off a couple of shirts.

47 years old here. Recently culled my wardrobe! Went to Dillards and spent to much money. Went with Cremieux jeans and shirts and polos'. Ordered free fly shorts and shirts. Several Reef flops and new socks and some Brooks shoe's to work out. Also got updated my outdoor apparel hiking pants and shirts to REI website. Gotta say, l look good for 47.
