Dr Bucknam was actually our pediatrician in Colorado for our oldest and he is the coauthor of Baby Wise. My wife read that and she was like the sleep Nazi. Those kids went to bed and that was it. We'd turn on the HBO and that was that.

People may think that this response is crazy but hire a sleep consultant. I do not have a baby yet (have one on the way) but I have several friends who have babies 0-6 m.o. and I know two that have hired sleep consultants

-Check reflux
-Check ears
-Check teething- (Try Tylenol dye free)
-Merlin's Magic Suit
It worked on my second child. Worth every penny.
My coworker borrowed ours and swears by it.
And he had a night nanny for 2 months...

Schedule is also important!

Moms On Call book.

You can't truly sleep train a baby, but routine is how they understand the world around them. Make a routine, stick with it.

I've got 2 with severe acid reflux. They were/are both on Nutramigen and prilosec. Sleeping was an issue with both. One had the painful kind of reflux, newest has the barf kind. So many times they just can't get comfortable or they Roll a bunch and barf.

Is the baby still swaddled? At this point they may still need to be swaddled. They still have the startle reflex sometimes. Also, at 4 months they enter a new realm of sleeping. They don't so easily fall into deep rem sleep. Takes more convincing. As others have said start a routine and do the same thing every night.

If the reflux is an issue, stick with a bassinet or whatever, slightly propping them will help. First child would not sleep in the crib until they could roll over and get comfortable on her belly at 4 months. New baby was the same but it took longer.

Crying it out is an option, but you know your child you can tell from the cries if they are just getting comfortable or they are pissed.

Take a little more time feeding them, prop them up a bit, feed them the bottle and then keep them propped. Don't just drop them in the crib when they fall asleep. I take my phone and once they fall asleep I'll play a game or read this God forsaken site for 5-10 minutes to make sure their stomach is settled and they are good and out.

Oh and STOP BURPING. If it's reflux you're just making it worse.

If it continues, see the pediatrician they may need Nutramigen or medicine.

No ear infection. He does have reflux and also has a very hard time with constipation, only craps about once a week. We have tried everything to help that, Karo, prune juice etc. tonight we walked him for almost 2 hours before he went to sleep.

He wiggles his legs, smacks gums, moves head, etc when fighting going to sleep. I am afraid we are getting to the cry it out crossroads. I am going to feel horrible but people say it works.

Formula? It may Be worth a try to swap. We ended up with a similac sensitive formula, but that was a little later.
Try the Merlin Magic Suit! Seriously... I couldn't believe the state puft marshmallow man suit worked.
My wife ordered every sleeping device available. Some worked on kid 1 that didn't on kid 2 and vice versa. Suit worked on both.

Our oldest slept in a swing for 9 months. I spent a lot of nights walking him around the house. It was the only thing that would give him relief some nights. This stuff helped too.

It does work. Biggest advice when doing this--watch the clock, literally. One minute will feel like an hour

That, and be consistent. Schedules are very helpful.

If your kid is sleeping in a rock and play when you transfer to a crib they are going to want to be at an incline as well. Stuff some towels or blankets under the mattress to give it an incline.

And to all you people who say your kid sleeps from 7pm - 7am I hate you with a passion

If a 4 month old is kicking his legs and crying he has colic.

I know two that have hired sleep consultants recently after trying everything and feeling absolutely hopeless. One friend in particular was up every 30-45 minutes with a screaming baby. She and her husband tried absolutely every bit of advice available and nothing worked until they hired the consultant. The baby now sleeps 10-12 hours (~5 months old) and the husband (who was a firm skeptic and non-believer) says it is the best $350 they've ever spent.

Good luck - I'm scared to death to be in your situation and I'd imagine I'd try just about anything. My daughter is due in 3 months

This is ridiculous. Some babies are allergic to milk, reflux and need to be slightly up at the head sleeping, have colic-if they spit up a lot consult doc for formula change. The gas drops many have posted pics of-- will not hurt babies. But please tell me you won't fall for a sleep whisperer, sleep consultant.

4.5 months is a little late for sleep issues like you describe, but not unheard of.

Basically the only guarantee...well frick, that. You have zero guarantees. But the only truly reliable hope is that he outgrows it. If you try a sleep method, don't go into it half-assed. Commit for a period of time.

I would say if he is sleeping fine during the day after feeding, it is not stomach issues.

Could just be his witching hour that he will have to outgrow.

Hate to say it, but suck it up buttercup. Billions of parents have dealt with this before you and survived. You can do it.
