Need some legal advice

I have a house in Louisiana and an apartment in Texas that I stay in when working around Dallas. I bought a truck in Texas while I was there for work, so it has Texas plates.
I got pulled over recently in Louisiana and got a ticket for failure to register my truck in Louisiana. I explained to the trooper that I have residence in both states, but he didn't care.
Do I have a legit argument? Can I get this ticket dropped by showing a copy of my apartment lease?

Well you've come to the right place.

What state is your ID and permanent residence?

Where is your primary residence? What DL do you have?

Assuming your DL is LA.
Register your car in LA asap, like today, take the paperwork to your hearing, and they'll probably drop it.

Well in this situation the OP is probably in violation of the law so I'm having trouble seeing your dillemma. The car needs to be registered in the state of permanent residence which seems to be La from the info we have.

If you have a DL in LA, you are a moron. Either move your TX plates to LA or move your LA DL to TX. Don't mention to a cop that you have addresses in their state. Appear to be from one place or another.
That was a lot of abbreviations.

If his ID is Louisiana, he's in the wrong and the cop is right.

Also, why would you not move your residence to Texas of that's where your work is? Automatic 5% raise.

He won't have to pay Louisiana state income tax anyways will he?

Yes he would. If you are a resident of Louisiana you are taxed on all income no matter where it's earned. There is a credit for tax paid to other states, but since Texas is a no income tax state all income earned in Texas is taxable in Louisiana.

Of course they tax you

This is common in TX because so many have moved to TX, especially Houston.
Its cheaper to have your car registered in TX and just change over your license plate.
What do snowbirds do? Where they live up north for 6 months and down south for 6 months. Many work in oil and gas industry and live in one state and work in another.
Are you going to move to TX permanently like many from Louisiana have done over the years?
Avoid paying state income tax but will have higher property taxes so it may be a wash in some instances. Not to mention car insurance is about 1/2 of what it is in Louisiana and you'll have great schools to send your kids.

Cop probably didn't enjoy the subtle 'I have 2 residences' brag.
Haters gon hate

You explained or proved that your residence was in Texas?
I mean, I'd love to get out of a ticket by explaining that I really live somewhere else.
Maybe I could explain that I wasn't really going 15 miles over the speed limit.
No, office, let me explain. I'm not drunk. I'm just high on life.

If he moves his permanent residence to TX he loses homestead exemption on his house in Louisiana.
If he can register the truck under a company in TX then he would be ok

How much is a ticket for that?

My drivers license is LA. The way this thread looks, I'm about to pay Concordia parish some money.
But hypothetically, if you have another place across the country...all the vehicles in your driveway should have LA plates? Doesn't seem right.
