I hear Lego bricks are big these days with the kids. If you do a Lego countertop at least all the random Legos in the kitchen can get stuck to it.

Quartz is the new granite.

go with quartz... sturdy, stain resistant, doesn't have to be sealed, etc... granite used to be the thing to have, but quartz has come in a basically replaced it

Considered them all last year and put in granite. There is something I really like about a piece of actual rock. Had quartz in the last house, I like the look of granite better and would do it again.

Made my own out of concrete.

I'd probably go with a high density memory foam.

What style house, what color/type cabinets, what color walls/floors does counter dictate backsplash or vice versa, what is price point of community.
In general I absolutely recommend countertops in the kitchen

Formica gives you tons of choices. It’s the only surface I’d trust.
