Tried to turn a lemon into a battery but it didn't work, and we want to go another direction.
Any thoughts?

You're in 6th grade? Prodigy

Just set up a basic circuit (9v battery, wire, light bulb) and have it open for a small segment. Let the topic be what metals are and aren't good conductors, ie what will make the light light up (copper, graphite, aluminum, etc.)

We did at what temp are magnets strongest
Used boiling them, room temp & putting them in dry ice & maybe something else

Torn between my desire to make a snarky joke and my desire not to get banned.

This is a pretty cool one Scruffy did.
LINK
It is an experiment about osmosis, but it looks cool because you remove the shell if an egg without rupturing it.
It takes only a few days to put together and is relatively cheap.

We need a subject or category.

This looks pretty cool.
Hovercraft
Hovercraft
quote:
Abstract
Have you ever ridden on a hovercraft? It is like gliding on a cushion of air! In this science project, you will make your own mini hovercraft using a CD or DVD and a balloon and investigate how the amount of air in the balloon affects how long the hovercraft hovers.
Objective
Investigate how different amounts of air in the hovercraft's balloon affect how long the hovercraft can hover.

Could make a little galvanic couple to demonstrate how you can corrode the hell out of stuff with a battery.

Son did one to see if the area had acid rain (took pH readings of rain over a couple of weeks). He was invited to the regional competition for it.
Also did one on how different variables affecting crystal formation. Didn't make it out of the school competition with that one. But, then again, that was our goal after suffering through a day-long regional competition the year before.
ETA: If you want to be like most parents in the regionals, though, you could just go ahead and create the project yourself for your kid.

Maybe a social science experiment observing the waterfall effect on other boards if the ot is locked for 3 hours

Anything environmental is going to get attention. People tend to have a mega hard on for anything involving a solar panel. I judged a science fair one time and the kid who won made a cool little solar powered car.

Scruffy's mom used to tell him to try not to win because going to those events were such a waste of time.
