Only problem with railguns in space would be Newton’s Third Law of Motion… equal but opposite reaction. The railgun would have to be attached to a pretty massive ship to ensure when it is fired it didn’t send the ship spiraling out of control. Lasers don’t have that problem.

Just sync it with another shot the other way. Problem solved.

Having worked on the rail gun project for about 2 years....it's a bigger waste of money than the F-35.

Turning a large asteroid (regardless of color) into a bunch of smaller asteroids isn't much of an improvement.

Also 4500 mph is nowhere near escape velocity.

The F-35 pilot's helmet is a cool half mil

Does the rail gun operators helmet cost a cool half mil?

Didn't think so...

Can no one read? Your own quote says that its anticipated that this will be installed on the recently commissioned ship that was having difficulty with its gun system having projectiles that cost 800k. It does not say anything about the cost of the rail gun projectiles. seems that no one on the first page has caught this.

The gun is already mounted on several Reagan class ships, your pics/video are old.

That's a cool video of the projectile hitting targets a point blank range.

I said at distance...just because the shell can reach 100 miles does not mean it going to do a lot of damage..that was my point.

I'm not defending the F-35, but it at least flies.

The railgun will never be used for anything other than those sweet videos.

The one in the gif is likely just a milled down chunk of tungsten. Probably costs $100k, counting R&D and everything

Still does seem pretty expensive but I wonder how much one of them there Tomahawk Missiles cost per trigger pull.
