A U.S. serviceman was killed in Northern Iraq Tuesday by direct fire from ISIS forces that penetrated several miles across Kurdish lines. He was a Navy SEAL, two U.S. officials told ABC News.

A Defense official told ABC News that ISIS used truck bombs to break through Peshmerga lines located about 17 miles north of the ISIS-held city of Mosul. The serviceman was killed by ISIS "direct fire" after ISIS forces pushed to his position. There were no other U.S. casualties in the incident.

Not going to be a dick about this but you don't know of what you speak.
This is EXACTLY the mission that SF is designed for and this death, unfortunate as it is, is the cost of doing business. That being said, this really isn't a SEAL or Delta or Force Recon mission. This is a SF mission. SF actually refers to U.S. Army Special Forces (Green Berets) and they are the ones trained to act as advisors.
Their real mission is to advise and use indig forces to kill our enemies. Which is what they are doing here and what they did when we kicked Taliban arse at the start of the war. Would you rather have 50,000 U.S. infantry going head to head with ISIS or a bunch of local fighters trained and advised by a handful of our guys doing the dangerous stuff? I am all for SF handling this mission. The indig forces are fighting for their homeland and I support us giving them the training, equipment, air support and advice they need. But they can risk their lives doing the fighting.
Anyway, read up on SF (read the Horse Soldiers) and the concept and I think you will find it enlightening.*
*I am not SF and don't claim to be but I have worked very closely with multiple elements of USSOCOM on training, doctrine and at the program level. They are some exceptional folks.

We've been quietly starting another war in Iraq.

It took 100 ISIS fighters to kill 1 Navy Seal.
Dammit.
Prayers to his family.

Well the operation has started. They just haven't made any progress to even close on the city yet.

FWIW, I have heard two versions of how this happened.
One was that the SEAL's were directly involved in a massive face to face gunfight with ISIS.
The other version was they were back from the lines and he got zapped with a round. Kind of like going to the mailbox to get your mail and getting hit by a car. shite happens.
While many would prefer the former, I hope this was a freak thing and our guys aren't putting themselves out there more than need be.

The life of one US service member is far more valuable than any of those ISIS vermin.

I think it was a combination of both. SEAL was at a Peshmerga compound behind the lines that was hit by a coordinated suicide bomb and infantry attack.

I read one version that said he got hit by a sniper. The media usually only gets about 60% of the story correct when it comes to combat. We'll never know what really went down but it's sad non the less.

According to what I've read, the US service member was killed along with 10 Kurdish peshmerga. 80-100 ISIS fighters were killed.

They're called Da'esh, not ISIS.

What do you mean it hasn't started? Have they attacked Mosul proper yet? No. But they've been attempting to move closer to the city by trying to take different towns and villages on the outskirts of the city. With varying success I might add. They've been pushed back several times. Saying the operation hasn't started is semantics.

quote:That's been going on for months and months, though. I don't think the operation has really begun until an effort to recapture the city has begun. Taking a town 40 km away or tidying up the front lines is certainly a preparation for the operation to recapture Mosul, but I wouldn't say it's the beginning of the operation.

I agree, it's semantics.
edit: but you said that "the attack on Mosul is not going well" and I just don't know how you can defend that statement. The attack hasn't even begun. And it was ISIS who attacked the peshmerga today, not the peshmerga who attacked ISIS. The US service member did not die in an offensive operation.

Yes I understand what happened. Big picture is that the Iraqi Army and Peshmerga are moving on Mosul. This is certainly a setback. It will require the Iraqis and the Kurds to dedicated more forces to protecting their rear areas.
