I thought this was an interesting read. Considering, I am a " millennial" and I hear a lot from friends and family of all ages that they are leaning twards cremation because it's more cost effective and less hassle.

This article leans more for people my age, but can a natural burial ( no embalming, head stone, casket, burial plot, almost like buring a pet) become part of the norm or is it crazy?

I don't understand why we do all that shite for a dead body anyways. It's dead, harvest all the potentially useful shite and burn the rest.

At Larkspur, working in sync with natural ecology is key, and the driving force of their mission. Bodies are not embalmed, and tombstones are not allowed on the property. But the natural burials are not meant to dissuade from use of the park’s overall green space: It boasts hiking paths, picnic spots, and an expansive wildflower-covered meadow to see wildlife. Burial plots in the meadow and woods are unmarked or noted by a flat commemorative stone, sometimes without any inscription. Visitors are encouraged to enjoy the beautiful scenery as they would at any other state park.

Sounds like the perfect place to dispose of a body.

I'm really into genealogy, so having marked graves really makes things easier.

But aside from the selfish reason, I agree with you.

With electronic records, you won't need a marked grave

A sky burial is a natural, traditional burial.

Perhaps, but there is still something cool about the actual grave.

That make since for them there. Mount Everest looms over Tibet. People who die on Everest typically are left there on the mountain. And they don't ever decompose. They just get sun bleached, and mummified almost.

I thought it is illegal to bury someone without embalming in Louisiana. After looking it up, however, a body must be embalmed or refrigerated if burial or cremation will not occur within 30 hours of death in Louisiana.

Funeral home lobby is strong in La and many other states. There is no reason any family should be told what they can or cannot do with the body of a loved one.

ETA: for normal circumstances

We did a cremation and just had a family gathering for my father. Yes, it is much more cost effective. More importantly, it was easier for my grieving. The day was more about remembering him. If it had been with his body on display it would have been a hundred times harder.

Because I don’t want to miss out on any potential zombie apocalypse, if I’m ashes I’m literally on the shelf.

Grave plots are shallow enough to allow the composting process to flourish.
Next heavy flood, you'll see dead bodies popping up all over the place.

The amount of money spent on burying a body that will never be seen again is the dumbest thing people do IMO

Just bury* me on that crime lab plot at Univ of Tennessee

*pretty sure they just like throw you on top of a rusted car and leave you to the elements so grad students can poke at you a few weeks later

They really do a lot more than that, they basically try to recreate crime scenes. They will leave you on top of the ground, shallow grave, deep grave, in the water, in shade, in direct sunlight, cover by tarp, etc., etc. then observe what happens to the body every step of the way. So that when they find a body they know exactly what they are looking at. I saw a really cool article about it a while back. If I can find it I will link it.

On the plus side, if you aren’t actually dead you could just walk back down the hill and not suffocate/burn to death
