I was at the museum today. Incredible experience. Construction has now begun on the next addition. The new Canopy of Peace will redefine the city’s skyline, provide light shows at night, and really tie the place together.

The National World War II Museum began work Wednesday on the Bollinger Canopy of Peace, a $14 million, 825-ton structure that is scheduled to join the New Orleans skyline later this year.
The 482-feet long, 135-feet wide structure has steel latticework supporting its Teflon-coated fiberglass panels. Held aloft by four steel legs anchored in more than 1,260 cubic yards of concrete, it will be illuminated at night with an exterior LED lighting system similar to those used at sport stadiums. Solomon Group is handling the lighting aspects of the project.
It is scheduled for completion in November, and museum officials say the 148-feet high structure will transform the look of the downtown museum.
“The Canopy is really going to stun our visitors and our local community members as soon as we begin construction and they see it going up,” Stephen Watson, museum president and CEO, said in a news release. “I don’t think anyone can really imagine what it’s going to be—you can tell people about it, but until they see it, they’re not really going to believe it.”

I don't get the point of the canopy. It just seems like a massive waste of money that will come loose in a hurricane.

The WWII museum is incredible

Yeah because they did zero testing for hurricanes!

So they’re spending $14 million on a big metal kite instead of actual historical artifacts from the war? Good idea

Who is they? It was completely funded by one man to build this.

Fine then. “He’s” spending his money on stupid shite.

Or maybe you just looked at a couple pictures and are just ignorant to the project’s intent.

Fine then, tell me the project’s intent.

Oh they probably tested for hurricanes but used the same people that tested that hurricane proof pedestrian bridge in Florida.

I dont care if the intent is to preserve one blue hair from getting her hair wet.
The WWII museum is one of the best, if not the best, thing in nola.
Do whatever for whatever reason.
Or, you know, take down historic facts instead of preserving them.
I am actually shocked the local government supports the wwii museum. (They probably dont, but cant find an angle to bolster their agenda)

My boy got call of duty WWII from the Easter bunny. I told him he's going to the museum.
He probably thinks they've got a Nazi zombies exhibit.

Have you ever been? They have almost everything you could imagine already. They even have some of Hitler's engraved silverware. The only thing I didn't see in there was a dead German.

In a hurricane, the entire building will take off and glide to San Antonio, where it will land safely next to the Saints new stadium.
