Coverage is based on the profile of the victims.

Not necessarily black people, but if it can be made into a larger political statement it will get more attention.

Every major news outlet in Houston has covered the flood event for a few days.

A quick look at any major national news outlet website will show that it has been given coverage.

The coverage may not be as extensive as some would want but it is being covered.

Weather channel is the only outlet broadcasting it 24-7.

My post was a reply to the question of why it was important for it to be picked up nationally. Yes I realize that it's not the first to receive little nationwide attention. I'm not sure however why you felt the need to point that out.

I'm in Houston and I haven't seen much about it either, but the only news I watch is local NBC and they've had the Olympics. But even the news I've watched doesn't seem to give it the same weight that it deserves.

Honestly, if it weren't for Facebook and a couple friends back home keeping me posted on some it, I wouldn't think that much of it. None of the people I work with or associate with have even mentioned the flooding to me.

Barely anyone in my office in Nashville realized what was going on.

My co-worker and I are both from Baton Rouge and everyone knows it (he posts here too). I told our boss this morning what was happening and she said "I didn't even know it flooded".

Is it just a coincidence that the worst flooding in history for many parts of Texas was just a couple of months before the worst flooding in history for most of Louisiana? Both events seemed very similar, just too much rain over a widespread area.

Meh. For things like this(natural disasters) it seems to be based on the death toll more than anything. I have seen a few segments here and there on CNN, though.

Do NOT read the comments on articles about the BR flood. Lots of morons equating these floods with Katrina and New Orleans (below sea level, looting, mostly blacks affected, etc.)

It's there, just not prominent.

Never said it wasn't there and it doesn't really bother me that the national outlets aren't making a bigger deal of it.

ETA: Only a couple links down from "6 things you never knew about left-handed people" and "Homeowner angry that cars keep crashing into his house">

Yes it is just a coincidence.

Many of the photos being shown on tv and through social media is just pictures of water everywhere. Many of us know those areas and what the areas looked like before flooding.

Once the water starts receding and the damage can be seen better and up close then I believe more will be coming out nationally.

Currently it is a busy news time with the Olympics and a bizarre presidential race.

What it comes down to is that most of the country doesn't care about small town Louisiana. I imagine this is how the people in Mississippi felt after Katrina.
