This. We have moved to either throwing medication at the mentally ill that when they can't afford they stop taking and go off the deep end, or we celebrate their illness and let them have easy access to our most impressionable. I do not know what the answer is for the mental illness in our country, but what we are doing now is not working. It's beyond time to stop pointing at inanimate objects as the root cause and start actually protecting the mentally ill from themselves and others.

I'll tell you this. I litigate in mental health court in Williamson County, TN (just south of Nashville/Davidson County), and there's only so much legally that can be done. Most of these people with legit mental health issues get there by not taking their meds, are involuntarily committed for a couple weeks, get back on their meds, and are ultimately released to a family member or a group home if they have no family to take them in. Insurance only covers so much, so long-term care isn't in the cards for far too many of them. And if no one ever reports them, there's no system to keep them in check. And that doesn't even address how many mentally ill people go their entire lives without ever being diagnosed.

Was wondering the same. If it was someone from the outside, how did they gain entrance. Hopefully the schools are taking proactive measures for security with all that has happened in the last few years.

Usually general laziness just like one of the more recent ones(I want to say the one in Florida) where teachers had just propped open a door that locks if closed.

It’s a small private school. I doubt they had their own resource officer/metro PO on-site.

the first is already illegal in every way possible

the second has nothing to do with anything other than you just getting a random drive by shot in at your “rival political gang”

all we should care about is
1) student safety (can be accomplished a lot of ways not involving more “gun control laws”)

2)why these shooters are getting to this mental breaking point

3) how any warning signs were missed by parents, friends, family, school admin, LEO and more

you can’t legislate out evil and ivory tower narcissistic politicians will never be on your side and help solve any actual issues in day to day life. making any of these topics political is exactly why nothing rational or common sense ever gets accomplished

The school is a at a church. Probably not any security there. And even if there was, if it's someone who frequented the place, they would have been let in. My daughter's pre-school has a thumb print access point to get in the school. But if it's not working, you can just knock on the door, and someone is there to let you in.

And I'm willing to bet that someone isn't exactly a Navy Seal-type person who would be able to stop them.

Never, and I mean never, miss a chance to turn this into a political issue as soon as you possibly can. You don’t care about these kids, you care about the political objectives you can use their deaths for.

It was the one in Uvalde, TX.

I can't imagine what the parents of these kids are going through. Nor what the first responders and administrators and teachers are going through.

Well that's unfortunate. My daughter goes to a small private school here in LC. They added security measures last year where you can't access the campus without being allowed in. They also added a parish officer on campus. The campus is like fort knox to get into... At least, as a parent. Hopefully that would translate to someone looking to gain access to do something terrible

WTN here in Nashville reporting 3 children and 2 adults dead. Some children fled into nearby woods. They have drones and helicopters looking for any that may be missing.

Yet those that vote for your team commit the vast majority of violent crimes in this country.

Nice gotcha attempt in a thread about dead kids.

Pretty nice private school in affluent area. Sounds terrible to say, but because of that I find it to be unlikely.

Most small private schools in Nashville have security, even church ones. Source: raised a couple of my kids there before moving away after elementary.

I am a proponent for small local government, but medical care and absence or inaccessibility thereof is one issue that I find my self in favor of a single payer system for. There needs to be for the safety of the public better access to not only treatment, but diagnosis as well. There has to be a middle ground between socialism and "not my tax dollars" where the mentally ill can be assessed better and not forced to go untreated because of astronomical medical bills and pharmaceutical prices.

This one hits close to home with a private school at those age ranges. My whole world (wife and kids) are at school each day , this is sickening to even think about happening

This is a very nice school and in a very nice neighborhood. It's fairly near to Green Hills, where my daughter (no pics) lives. I've passed by this church/school quite a few times.

It's just heartbreaking.

My heart dropped when I got a call about school shooting but was to inform me it was a nearby school.

Yeah, this is terrifying and sad as hell.
