Knock yourselves out with the fermi paradox. Long read:

If the great filter exists, I see that from 2 different perspectives:

1)It is totally terrifying and heartbreaking that after all these millennia of evolution, the human race could simply hit a glass ceiling whenever the universe decides to send us a curveball. Not out of some universal masochism but out of eventuality. That is was terrifies me as an outward looking part of this system. We are still on this little rock in space, moving at what seems like a snails pace while theory says we have a galactic sized train heading our way.

2) Now on the other hand, if this galactic filter exists, it could reasonably be assumed that at some point, some species makes its through. It could be literally one in a trillion species spread out across the galaxy that advance far enough to exist beyond a filter, but that is not zero. If that is so, making it past the point of being vulnerable to a filter could be the greatest accomplishment a species could aspire to(knowingly or not) up to that point. By simply existing, the filter could ensure that only a select few species in the galaxy, those who advance far enough and fast enough earn the right to exist outside of their home planet, star system, etc. Survival of the fittest on a galactic scale, influenced almost entirely by chance but also dependent on the entire species ability to advance beyond that vulnerability.

Now, if you are this species that makes it through, there is no doubt you'd realize the existence of a great filter of varying types and that you are either essentially the luckiest or simply the "best" for existing at your current state at all.

If so, if you were this species, would you have it in mind that you should artificially facilitate the survival of other species?(ie. giving others a hand even though you were not helped in any way?) or would you sit back and let the universe take its course on others like it did for you and wait for next species to "earn" the right to exist beyond the filter?

I believe there is life on other planets but I don't believe we will ever see it. NASA must be looking for funding.

Good, they need more funding. NASA is a great dept and so much innovation has come from it including the technology we posses and posting on the Internet. It is criminal how we have neglected NASA. They need billions of more dollars. I'd rather fund science and innovation than foreign wars, welfare queens and the War on Drugs.

Well, no shite they're looking for funding, since Obama has neutered them to be a mere weather prediction wing of the government.

Yep, frick Obama sideways for that. frick him.

The average demand voter is an unenlightened a-hole how can't see the value of Munsey if it's not spent directly on themselves.

The theory of evolution and carbon dating certainly hasn't changed it. Humanity will always starve for some kind of superstition.

I asked this in a thread about finding extra terrestrial life:

quote:

Do you think God has had to become incarnate for other species to understand He is the One True God and show his love? Or do you think they didn't question it?

Was His incarnate form accepted without much hostility? Or does each intelligent culture destroy their Creator's lowly form each time?

but I am really curious how religious people will respond to the news

The same way atheists would if they said Christians were right. Keep believing what they want.

I'm an atheist and I'd be happier than a pig in shite if there were any reason to believe in God. I'd pay to believe in God. Nothing would make me happier than for there to be a creator that planned my existence/life. We're not athirst because we don't want to believe, we're atheist because we can't.

And seeing as this thread won't get away from religion and most likely will be anchored or deleted:

I find it hilarious that some people think Jesus went on a galactic tour of the Milky Way. Asking aliens if they believe in Jesus Christ is no different if they came here and asked us if we believe in Xamirlus Zzvvtyg. People on our own planet can't agree on a religion, and you think a species across the galaxy will?

As for the OP: to be alive when humanity discovers it isn't alone would be sensational. I couldn't imagine something more exciting or rewarding. Can't wait.

And snarky comments like these don't help anything. That's part of the reason we can't have a civil discussion about religion is because some tool always spouts off "LOL FLYING MEATBALL MONSTER IN THE SKY!"

So what would be the worst alien life form find? Everyone wants to anticipate they are much further ahead than us and can give us this an that technology, what if they are completely behind us? On to the next one?

Obama fricked NASA right in the arse. It's good to see they still have enough money to do press releases.

I listen to religious talk radio as a guilty pleasure. I actually can suspend reality long enough to drift off into it a bit. My wife, who really wished I believed, is amazed at how long I listen. I love it. It's fricking nuts, but damn if they aren't good. I don't think the believers listen as hard as I do. When I get into conversations about what was said she's not even aware that they tried to lay out a three pronged answer to a philosophical question. When I explain their points without the flowery words she laughs her arse off. I mean really, lawyers and preachers can tell you the sky is green in a hundred words and it actually sounds true. They're masters, but it begs for dissection.

There really is no room for conversation.

No he didn't. Both parties fund NASA at relatively the same levels, and Dems generally are more science oriented. Repubs want the space race, which is kind of a joke. Clinton was the motherfricking man when it came to NASA. The earth science application was glorious and Bush shite on what would have been an epic use of funding.

Everybody wants the space race. It's exciting. I've never even heard of the "earth science application" so I doubt it was that glorious. Start another space race and people will get interested again. Then NASA will have the money for other science shite.

Worse. Hawking has said, they would probably develop interstellar travel out of need.

They aren't on a peaceful 5 year mission. They would come for resources and slaves.

Yee haw.

I started working at NASA during the ESA and trust me, it was epic. It was too forward thinking I guess.

I'd love another space ship. Not really testing any engines for that though. Space X wants to vertically land the booster stage back on land...that's pretty fricking epic.

I can't wait for all of these scientists to realize they're wasting their time.
