He's not the only one. It's a great thought experiment to imagine what would happen after first contact.

It's bullshite that we don't have a small moon base or at least sent somebody to Mars.

Something i have always question even as a kid in bible class. If this could be a rational discussion i'd like to continue it but there is no way that is possible so lets drop the religious aspect.

Can we being steering this discussion away from religion now? This happens every time. 1 page about the topic itself and then 13 pages of back and forth about how this or that will affect religion.

It gets annoying.

Dude, we're talking about the possibility of discovering that we are not alone in the universe. That's gonna cause some serious head scratching and rethinking of our old philosophies.

You just can't separate the two topics.

What if they just need human bones as a natural resource? That's it. They need a calcium supply. Just that fact alone would make it a horror show.

Probably not much. Most religious folks I know believe live exists outside the earth. Hell, Billy Graham did.

I honestly do not understand this ..

Are you saying that the existence of life on other planets proves that religion is false ?

the researcher that talked to us says they are making advancements in being able to tell composition of atmospheres, and you can induce if plant life and/or animal life was present based off the composition of the atmosphere.

That was also something I was thinking that we could possibly do. It's not like we discovered the first extra-solar planet by actually seeing it. Just making some simple math calculations.

That's just within this Galaxy. And how many millions/billions of galaxies are in the Universe?

the talk was really interesting. I wish I could remember his name. He explained a few ways they could do this, basically its based off of colors/gases/and light of the star.

I have no problem with speculation for the sole purpose of fun but for someone that like Hawking to throw out totally baseless comments like that is irresponsible in my opinion. He has no fooking idea what aliens will do or how they will feel about us so his speculation is as valuable as the speculation of a cow.

Obviously

I didn't say it proves anything. Just wanted to know how it would affect religion.

You all say it wouldn't.

Guess I got my answer.

Of course you cant entirely, but this has been discussed 1000 times on this forum. What is not brought up often is the political ramifications of discovering life, whether is it simple or intelligent. I feel the best discussion should be about the latter.

Say, if we discover an intelligent species, through direction communication or observation, what, if any, laws are in place to govern our next move in regards to contact?

I expect that at some point, the US or UN have brought up the possibility of contact and hopefully have some protocol in place.

For example, I have heard somewhere that in the event of direct contact, the immediate response if to ALWAYS assume they are hostile until proven otherwise( I dunno if this is real or not but it is an interesting concept)

Another topic should be how the governing bodies of the planet will evolve/dissolve. If we contact an intelligent species directly, is it wise to remain separated by so many national boundaries with a United Nations as weak and un-unified as it is? Or do we put much more emphasis into the UN and give them greater power to make decisions for the whole of the world in regards to this new species?

This is what i think is interesting.

It's because the fricking nerds have taken over. NASA used to be run by badasses who flew fighter jets and slayed massive amounts of pussy. They didn't give a shite if it was dangerous. They new how much trim being able to say they walked on the moon would get them.

Now NASA is full of a bunch of Fedora wearing losers who get a hard on when some robot snaps a few pictures of the Martian desert.

Well I wasn't really promoting him as the preeminent mind on interstellar relations, but I thought the idea he promotes is a valid concern and an interesting debate.
