I went back and re read some of the OP posts. So you said the scammers asked for 7k, then another 10k, then ANOTHER 17k? Did I read that right? Your wife is a special kind of stupid, dude.

Real story is what thing did your wife do that made her feel like there was an actual warrant out for her arrest. She had to of done something that compelled her to think that this was real.

This woman was the FINANCIAL ADVICE COLUMNIST for NY Mag and got scammed to the tune of $50,000, which she threw into the trunk of a passing car which was supposedly driven by an undercover CIA agent.

The story is 10x more insane than OP's. I don't know if this will make him feel better but he (his wife) is not alone

She is also very trusting and sees the best in people.

Hate to break it to you, she doesn't trust you. I get that they "made" her stay on the phone for hours but it didn't occur to her to drive to you? My husband is an hour away on the days he is in the office and I would have piled the kids in the car and drove to him LONG before I drove all over tarnation to multiple banks and bitcoin machines.

She needs to follow your local LEO social media pages. Ours post about scams frequently and always end with what they will not ever do: they will never call about warrants, they do not call to collect payment over the phone, they will never ask that payment be made in bitcoin or gift cards.

A good rule of thumb is if you can't directly pay your taxes with it (bitcoin, gift cards) it is a scam. Further, no government or law enforcement agency will call demanding payment for fines or whatever. They'll send a letter or knock on your door with full SWAT behind them, they simply are not calling and demanding restitution right away.

See if your agencies have a citizen academy for your wife to attend. I went through an 8 week course with our sheriff's office/corrections and learned so SO much about what they do and how they operate. Not one of those officers would be fussed if someone hung up on them to call the main line and check them out first. If she understood how they operate she would have been able to sus out that the call wasn't legit.

I'm sorry this happened to you but it wouldn't be a bad idea to just go over how these agencies operate because then she would have known there was zero chance they were legit.

This is legit. This literally happened to my wife around the same time last year but am now thankful she was only dwindled for 3k and not 17k. The thief also went as far as masking the caller ID with the Knoxville County Sheriff's Department mainline. This is a legit scam
And, like the others, your wife is a legit moron. It does not matter what the caller ID says. When and if they tell you what the warrant is for go in person to the office of the "alleged" issuer for the warrant and turn your self in. Then when the agency tells you there is no warrant VOILA you walk out and go home. fricking idiots out there among us.

gain, I'm not saying it isn't stupid, I'm just saying that when people panic, they don't think rationally.
It's a fricking arrest warrant. If it is legit why not just turn yourself in and bail out? $17K will not drop any charges on the warrant regardless. Good God some of you need instructions on how to breathe.

Bingo. How fricking hard is it to call the sheriffs dept and tell them what happened. If they say everything is fine, then you’re good to go. If they say otherwise take care of it.

Take it for what it’s worth. I’m not going to try and convince anyone it’s real but I can assure you it is.

I understand the skepticism because I too cannot believe this happened to us. It will take a long time to get over this. There are a couple of people on TD that know me and know that it really did happen.

So, are you trying to publicly embarrass your wife, should she ever find this thread?

If this shite happened to anyone in my family (and some extended family DID get scammed, recently) I'm not creating a thread about it.

I’d love to see these “posters” who know him post on this thread confirming story.

Seriously, don't be too hard on your wife.

Wtf why not? His wife just pissed away their life savings without even bothering to inform her husband. She didn't think $17k might warrabt a second opinion? What else is she doing that she's not telling him about?

I was wondering this too. If you have an outstanding warrant, then go to the Sheriff Department and get it straightened out. If it's legit then bond out and have your day in court.

don't disagree, just trying to get in this poor lady's head. Even if the OP is a troll, this actually happens ALL the time. It seems insane that people fall for it, but they do

The person I know who fell for this:

1) warrant was somewhat feasible for a normal person who isn't hiding a crime. Taxes prepared incorrectly and ignored summons.

2) they said they just panicked and only thought about police handcuffing them at work and getting processed into jail.

Still dumb beyond belief but not necessarily that the person has to be on the run from a felony.

Or instead of driving around town buying up doodoo coins, swing by the police station & see if you can straighten all this out before you empty your bank account.

Not sure if you’ve connected the dots, but your wife is banging the FBI agent and they’re getting a head start on screwing you in the divorce.

As painful as losing $17k is, having a wife dumb enough to fall for this shite is the real heart breaker. I can understand old people getting ripped off because they have dementia but even a fricking mongoloid wouldn't fall for this. I'm sorry, I mean that sincerely, she's fricked up on drugs or something, there's no average, or even below average person, who would fall for this. If everything about your story is legit, you need to take her to a neurologist. I'm not even kidding.

Yep... 19 pages and none of these friends have come in to vouch for this incident.

Until one does, then I'm calling bullshite on this whole thread.

This is the problem. Simp husbands allowing their idiot wives to pay the idiocy mortgage with sex. Never let sex with your wife be a means to make up for life altering dumbass decisions.
