Had some training to complete for work today and watched a video on micromanaging and it made me curious.

Has anyone ever had a boss say “my way or the highway”? Who says this lol? What type of person would actually say this? lol.

If you have how in the frick did you react? I think I honestly might laugh.

To each their own.

I just find it very off putting. What if their way is fricking terrible?

Yikes. There are levels of, you know, materiality etc. to consider. Also, process and procedure. Could be costing the institution a lot of money just doing the my way or the high way thing.

I had a boss that told me around here people work to live. Where I come from, we live to work.

Yikes what?

If I’m saying ‘it’s my way or the highway’ then I don’t want your input

So it my way, I am the boss, or get out

Yes. Working for Mr. Durst was quite the headache. Especially when he had "one of those days."

I had one that looked at time stamps in the financial software to see what time people booked entries.

When I saw him do this I was shocked.

Went through over 25-30 transactions. Non material. Non income statement affecting. Literally documented the times of each just to call out 2-3 people.

When you say boss, are you talking about a manager? Or a business owner?

I’ve owned my businesses for almost 20 years. I take on 100% of the risk and never get to clock out. I’m fair to all of my employees, and I listen and am open to ideas, but it’s going to ultimately be done the way I want to do it. And I’ll be 100% to blame if it fails.

Not a business owner.

Someone managing in a company.

I had a hard arse boss like this. He was very old school. I loved him once I got used to him. I always knew exactly what was expected of me. He treated everyone fairly, but was demanding about the work. There was no politics and no preferential treatment. He was a good man. I still respect him a lot. Ironically I’ve never had problems with these kinds of bosses. My dad was very strict, lol.

My Dad told me that and then I ran away for three days until my older brother found me. He didn't use that phrase anymore.

It depends on the employee. Some can handle complete autonomy and are smarter than I am. Others require a much more hands on approach with very clear instructions and frequent oversight. But I have never told anyone the highway thing.

“my way or the highway”

I had a boss for about 3 years who I could get into some pretty heated "discussions" in management meetings. I mean heated. Sometimes he would get so pissed the only thing he could say was "you can do anything you want on your last day of work, the only question is if today is your last day".

I think he fired me 4 times, always called once we cooled down to see if I was coming in on Monday. 2 of the 4 times I got a raise.

It wasn't a "my way or the highway" thing as much as two highly driven people with good ideas who needed to learn to communicate way better than we did. I really learned a lot from him and he from me.

Friends to this day.
