I am by no means an animal expert, but I have plenty of experience with dog bites. I am an ER doc and I work at a couple hospitals in the New Orleans area. The past 4 years I’ve seen well over 100 people that have come in for dog bites. Everything from minor puncture wounds to 4 year olds with their faces Completely avulsed. What I’ve learned is there is two types of dogs that bite people:

1) police K-9s that are trained and bite criminals when they are told to

2) pitbulls

Without exaggerating I can say that over 95% of the bites I’ve seen that were not from police dogs have come from pits. Most are random acts by pits that are roaming around without their owner, but I’ve also seen plenty of pit attacks on owners or owners children.

I think they should be eradicated, but can’t really complain. As long as people keep owning pit bulls I’ll have job security.

On a side note, I see plenty of puncture bites from house cats. Definitely more cat bites than dog bites from breeds other than pits.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics, black males account for 37% of the total male prison population, while blacks only make up 12% of the U.S. population. So, in your opinion, does this mean that we should eradicate black males?

IMO, it's a vicious cycle. Pitbulls probably already have a greater propensity for aggressiveness than other dogs. Then you couple that with their attractiveness to trashy owners and you get the perfect storm. A dog who already wants to fight and an owner who doesn't give a shite. Pitbulls get a rep for being vicious dogs and trashy owners want them because of it.

No need to get your panties in a ruffle and start name calling you little bitch. It was a question since the OP says numbers don't lie. I didn't say I agreed with it and was making a point that other factors have to be considered.

what was your point? you can't compare a dog bred to be violent to a person.

I'll throw a couple of questions out just to clarify;

1. Does New Orleans has a higher population than other cities when it comes to pit bulls?
2. Do you usually see a picture of the dog that did the bite?
3. Is Downtown N.O. a poorer downtown than other major cities?

I've hung out in the quarter but never been there longer term. I know there is still some Katrina effect and I know there's that pitbull show on T.V. and she lives in NO because there are a lot of pits.

I'm a dog owner (he's a mix and he may well have pit in him somewhere; he's stocky but lab features), so I have somewhat of an interest in that if my dog bit someone, would he be clarified as a pit? I'm a psycho owner who never lets him off leash outside dog parks and i watch him like a hawk (more for what other dogs would do to him than the other way around) in them.

Thanks for your info. I think most would agree there is a correlation as to owner wealth and pitbull attacks, but curious to hear what you know on all that stuff

So you are saying it's impossible to breed bad humans but not bad dogs? You don't think maybe it has something to do with the environment we are raised in, just like the environment a dog is raised in. I say this as a black man who has never committed a crime, because I was fortunate enough to be raised in a good home; just like my 2 pitbulls that have taken more rough housing from my children than any dog has.

To answer your questions:

1) I don’t think it’s necessarily about the dogs in an urban area, I also work in amite and Slidell and I’ve seen some gruesome attacks out there. As far as downtown, there aren’t a ton of large dogs but owning a place in the quarter is pretty pricey so you get more lap dogs I feel like. There are plenty of large dogs in the neighborhoods and a decent bit seem to be pits or pit mixes. It tough to tell about the financial status of the owners because it’s such a checkerboard city and some of the nicest houses are 2 blocks from the projects.

2) prob see a pic about 30 percent of the time but that’s just because some of these are attacks on owners or known neighbors. For Random attacks usually people don’t take the time to photograph the dog. But let’s be honest, people know what a Pit looks like and they’re pretty hard to mistake

3) kind of answered in question 1- depends on what you call downtown exactly, but the quarter is expensive property.

4) Buck, you’re clearly the one with “your panties in a wad.” You’re not comparing apples to apples or even apples to oranges for that matter. You’re comparing apples to space ships. Grow up.

At the end of the day, I’ve never owned a pit and I don’t plan to; but I have plenty of colleagues and people I respect that have pits or mixes. I don’t correlate owing one with being trashy or poor, but I do associate them with violence. If I have offended anyone (except for buck), I apologize, that wasn’t my intention. with all the pit talk today I figured I’d share my thoughts

Apples and oranges are both types of fruits.
Dogs and humans are both mammals.
I'm not sure where the spaceship comes into play or how you became a doctor with that logic.

I was raised with 2 pit bulls and they never acted aggressively towards anyone. But if someone unknown decided to hop our fence in the middle of the night and try to break into the house they would get mauled by our pits. There are a lot of other breeds that would so the same.

All this talk about eradicating the entire breed is nonsense. Some folks should really get to know the breed for making the stupid comment about eradication.

This just proves that you are having an emotional response.
