Teach him now what to expect when he gets to college.

Well, like the email title I posted just a few posts up, you can't get through the workday solely through speaking. Until written (or typed) communication is no longer necessary, spelling and grammar will always be necessary to not look like a dunce.

In a work setting? Most assuredly. But, you can educate yourself without having to apply that knowledge to a work setting.

No point in arguing, for the majority of the world, you are correct.

My Dad always said that poor spelling is a sign of ignorance.
Your dad sounds like a fricking idiot. Does he think Earnest Hemingway, F Scott Fitzgerald, and William Faulkner were all ignorant? They were all notoriously bad spellers.

You went to the principal over this?

That's the sad part.
would be great if all you know-it-alls would quit making asses of yourself by assuming everything. I didn't go to the principal. I emailed the teacher, and the principal emailed me back.

Yet another know-it-all assuming stuff. The teacher didn't teach. She simply gave the assignment and told them to do it. That's not teaching; that's daycare.

The issue is an educated person most likely wouldn't choose to not apply that knowledge. So there will of course be a small minority of highly intelligent people that can't use simple grammar or spell simple words. But they are the extreme outliers, not anywhere near the norm.

Exactly, and spelling "correctly" is a form of mental slavery. Who decides what is correct and what isn't HMM?

You're correct that the standardization of language and spelling has "evolved" over time.

I would NOT say that adhering to today's standards of spelling is mental slavery.

Why do we have a system of weights and measures? Greenwich Mean Time? Standardization. So we can accurately communicate and work with each other.

If everyone spelled things however they felt, we wouldn't be able to communicate with each other through the written word.

So where you draw the line with misspelling?

Atrocious spelling and grammar is already hampering communication. I've read Facebook posts where the spelling and grammar was so terrible that I literally could not understand what thought the writer was trying to convey.

For example (this is an actual facebook post): "atleast ik my dog nvr guna leave me"

What?

ever heard of auto correct?

You are upset that his teacher is grading him appropriately for spelling. You then try to excuse your poor spelling/grammar by blaming auto-correct?

This is the exact reason you are getting the responses you are getting. Laziness is not an admirable trait.

Why don't you proof read your kid's homework assignments. Help him that way, not by complaining about the policy.
Another swing and miss by a know-it-all. Do any of you stop and think before you say stupid shite? It was not homework. I do proofread my kids' homework. The assignment we are discussing was done in class. Can you show where I gave any indication this was homework?

This. A lot of people take autocorrect for granted like it is infallible. The culture of youth today using lazy ways to text, ie U, isn't helping either.

To be honest I've sent emails at work with misspelled words because I hit spell check and it says it's all good. Most embarrassing thing I've ever done

Hey moron. I'm not being graded on a message board for spelling. Auto correct isn't an excuse, not to mention a message board is completely informal, so spelling really doesn't matter. That point is probably over your head.

Just like calculators have eroded the math skills of students, autocorrect in texting or email has eroded students' ability to spell correctly.

My daughter is a straight "A" student in the 8th grade and her spelling skills are not very good. I wish they would take off points more often since that would motivate her to try harder to maintain her average. Instead, if it is not a spelling test then it seems like the spelling does not matter.

Not defending "them," but it's not a hard sentence to figure out.

7th grade and he can't take time to spell. Should be counted off. You do understand this is to make things better for him in his future, right? Attention to detail is important in life for most people to be successful.

It's called being "Cultured"

I had no problem at all understanding "atleast ik my dog nvr guna leave me"

Let me put it in white speak for you:

"At least I know my dog is never going to leave me."

If you guys could drop the racist, cultural denigration, you would see that this is a person who loves their dog. He conveyed emotion and thriftiness all within the confines of the English language.

But I guess this is all too much for the Puritanical Grammar slaves. Expand your mind bro.

edit: spelling
