It's safe to say my 7th grade son is more mature than you are. Get lost.

He has a point. You are bitching at others for reinforcing the fact that a teacher holding your son and his classmates to a high standard is a bad thing. You then tell buckeye, that his response was correct because he agreed with you.

With the ever present social media today, spelling has taken a beating. Your kids teacher is actually forcing him to use his brain. Why would you not want your son held to a higher standard? If you are ok with mediocrity, then by all means, pull your son out of school and put him in some shitty public school. Sure he may do better there, but when he gets to college or the real world, he will be an average to below average achiever. Is that how you want your kid growing up? Where the hard problems are just given to him?

And as for the idiot that said spelling is unnecessary now, due to "spellcheck". The quickest indicator for lack of intelligence is spelling. Idiots on twitter or facebook that can't get the You're, your correct, or idiots on here that don't understand punctuations shows how little importance education was placed on their (there, their, they're) lives.

Spelling is vital. Spellcheck is not a safeguard against stupidity.
Math is vital. A calculator is not a safeguard against stupidity.
Education is vital. Being stupid is not an excuse to underachieve.

Either educate your child, or condemn him to the current dregs of society leeching off the others.

This is either one of the better trolls ever on the OT, or OP is a moron of epic proportions.

My thought?

Given that you have yet to really clarify the assignment, it's no mistake to assume they have time to proof-read.

If it was a hand written, in class assignment I would agree that 10 points per mistake is on the harsh side. If it was a typed assignment and spellcheck was available then your son was docked 10 points for being to lazy to actually make the corrections.

But if it was hand written, I don't know how one would leave the 'n' out of introduced.

Not to mention, in grade school spelling tests (at least when I took them) you have time to take a quick look over your work. Sure, you can't pull out a dictionary. But that's no excuse to not give it the ol' once over before turning it in.

What's wrong with this?

Sorry the teacher's not sorry for teaching your kid not to overlook misspelled words.

One of the English teachers at my middle school made one of my friends write "ain't" 5000 times to get him to stop saying it. It worked. He wasn't even in her class at the time.

In college I misspelled a single mineral on one exam and got deducted 1 point. I made a 119/120.

I still remember that grade today. And you know what? Ever since then I learned to review my tests and spell words and minerals.

Made me a better student.

Yes it is worth 10 pts, know why.....the teacher said so.

Don't teach your kid to be an excuse seeker.

If someone types up an application and misspelled 5-6 words for every 80 typed they would be viewed as a moron. You seem to think they deserve praise and an A+.

Tell your boy he needs to proof his work. Lesson learned.

Communication professor here.

The writing quality of the average college student is atrocious. Spelling, grammar, etc. When I was an undergraduate, I took classes where one misspelling = F. If I did that to my students, no one would pass.

Like someone correctly stated, grades do not start counting until ninth grade, so do not sweat it. The soccer mom culture we live in forgets that traditionally a grade of B means that you are a master of a subject. I've had students that sobbed uncontrollably at an 85. That's ridiculous.

The proper thing for you to do is to make sure your son recognizes his mistake, and remind him that focusing on the small things leads to success. A great life lesson that your son's seventh grade teacher is indirectly teaching. Don't screw it up by making it "the teacher's fault."

Well, when you write or type something using any language in the world, aren't you supposed to spell everything correctly and use correct grammar? It's better to hammer that point home early and I have zero problems with the teacher trying to emphasize correctly spelling words.

This. A lot of people take autocorrect for granted like it is infallible. The culture of youth today using lazy ways to text, ie U, isn't helping either.

i see the point about spelling being an indication of carefulness.

I also see the side that says spelling is overrated and it's putting form over function. Look at the history of the English language and you'll see what a hodgepodge it is and how arbitrary it is. There is no specific reason why many words are spelled like they are in the first place.
