Maybe it was English or spelling class and not a writing class?
Congrats on your not so subtle brag on 25 years of teaching with positive results.

Maybe his son is his sin.

All the more reason to make sure people actually know how to spell. If you misspell words too often or egregiously, spell check will embarrass the frick out of you.

I think it is great you are concerned about your son's education, but as one poster has already said, it's just middle school. There are people at all levels, across many professions, that put a high value on spelling and grammar. It may not even be relevant to the job. Learn now because he will cross paths with someone like that again.
Today I was asked to interview some internal candidates for a client's job opening just so he could get my thoughts. He threw out one guy because he put periods on bullet points. The guy was great in all other aspects.

Um so you type everything you write? Everything? I don't want to live in a shitty society where no one can spell and everyone is dependent on spell check.

Most people double and triple check their resumes and cover letters to make sure there are no spelling errors.

The responses saying spelling isn't that important are killing me. Spelling basic words is one of the earliest fundamentals we learn in school. If you can't spell simple words by a certain grade, say 7th, to me it shows that you're either stupid or extremely lazy.

See, bs like this from a teacher is the reason kids LEARN to hate writing. 10 points off at any grade is too much. Maybe 3 points.
I mean, there are other components of writing besides spelling. Think about it for a second.
Content - great
Word usage - great
Coherent and unified - great
Sentence structure - great
Misspelled three words - 70 D or F depending on the school.
That is just flat out unfair to grade like that.
This is absolutely correct in general, but if the core lesson for that particular assignment, which was apparently all of 2-3 paragraphs of writing, was spelling, than I can understand it.

Hes only in seventh grade, when he gets to college he'll appreciate his tough teachers... Well maybe

If a word is spelled correctly but used out of context, spell check won't pick up that error. You're assuming that the writer knows the difference between whatever word is used and the correct word.
Their, they're, there
Hear and here
Where and wear
Where and were
(The list goes on and on.)
Read TigerDroppings posts and you'll see how many people misuse and misspell words.

Minus 10 for you. The correct word is then.

Microsoft Word will pick it up.

The principles both stand behind the teacher on the issue. At least 2 students go 70's for misspelling words.
I think you mean Principals. One way to remember this is to say "The head of the school is my PAL." Then you will remember the difference between the word principle and the word principal.
Anyway, where do you think your kid learned these inferior spelling habits?

I'm laughing at you checking every post in this thread and triple checking your own posts to make sure you don't look foolish. What a loser.
