I did not read the whole thread. I commend the teacher for teaching your kid to be on point with his spelling. Your boy learned a cheap lesson that will serve him well for years. It is a cool thing that he learned it at a young age and small price.

HE will thank the teacher later.

It's not a generalization. You either know how to spell correctly or you don't. If you do know how to spell correctly but choose not to, that make s you lazy when it comes to conveying your message.

No, he doesn't. It was a typo, essentially. Good spellers can make careless mistakes.

Do you know how stupid this sounds? I get where his issues come from with spelling and I guess reasoning. Best of luck to him.

Why write 300 words with advanced and complicated vocabulary, risk make 3 or 4 mistakes when one could write 75 simple words, and maybe lose a few points for lack of content, but have minimal risk of making any spelling errors?

I´m sure the teacher would wrest beaucoup points, upon seeing fourth grade level content submitted by a seventh grader.

Well it doesn't seem like the teacher values the content and communication as much as spelling if one error--regardless of how much is written--results in a 10 point deduction. If it was based on the percentage of misspelled words, that would have made more sense and showed more balance.

No it's a matter of knowing what your good at. Some people are spellers and that's fine, they can be graded on spelling. But this kid is obviously very smart at most things but not spelling so he should be graded on his smartness not his spelling. There's no reason to grade people on things there not good at.

Does the teacher not realize that with computers and spell check, spelling accuracy is not as important? Besides if the policy is # of spelling errors regardless of how much one writes, then it just incentivize students to write less. Frankly, the teacher's policy is shortsighted and I question his critical-thinking.

I disagree completely. With your way of thinking, why teach math? Computers are way better at math than any human. And why bother with grammar? Word processors show you 99% of all grammar mistakes, or possible mistakes.

I believe she is teaching them something. She's teaching them to slow down. Stop racing to finish an assignment. Stop being careless! Learn to frickin' proofread! I wonder if they even teach proofreading techniques anymore.

To the OP: Do you think your little punk should get credit in math class for getting close the correct answer? I mean, 9x7 equals about 60-something, right?

The way English words are spelled was largely cobbled together arbitrarily once printing became popular. There was no standard spelling for many words. There were no standard words for many concepts. There were numerous dialects each with their own vocabularies. So early printers just had to pick and choose what words and spellings they would use. So tell me what is so sacred about these spellings which were arbitrarily decided by individual men in England in the 1500s?

I see your point too, as I stated initially. But some very smart and educated people are poor spellers, just like some great spellers are poor at math.

If the teacher is worth their salt, they´ve simply put these kids on notice that it´s the end of an era (elementary school), and they´d better start paying attention.

He's in the 7th grade. That seems far too much. Does anyone agree? He used 81 words and got a 90 for leaving off one letter (itroduced). The principals both stand behind the teacher on the issue. At least 2 students got 70's for misspelling word.

Just send your child to a BR school. As long as they have a 1.5 GPA they can still play sports because sports are all that's important today anyway.

Maybe we should just give them an a for effort? We have got to stop teaching our kids that as long as you try you will succeed.

The teacher could have sent the same message by deducting 3 points, or 5 points.

It depends on the course syllabus. If the kid is giving essay answers on Roman architecture, spelling should be weighted lower than a grammar or literature course.

Exactly. Counting off for stuff they're not good at may make them feel insecure or hurt their feelings. And we all know that never happens in the real world
