I see no problem with 10 points off. Puts the students on notice for the rest of the school year that shite like that won't be tolerated. You should be thanking the teacher rather than bashing, and it isn't like the kid's life is ruined- it's the 7th freaking grade, and you should be happy the teacher cares enough. It is their job, after all. Maybe you'll cut the oil technician at Wal-mart some slack when they put in a half-arse effort on your next visit.

I'm gonna go with troll attempt, and a poor one at that on this thread.
Your kid needs to learn to spell, pure and simple. Teacher is trying to teach them something. Be a supportive parent of the teacher.

What? There's nothing overrated about being educated. To get educated you have to be able to spell and have good grammar. You could be the smartest person in the world, but if you can't properly convey your thoughts in a way that is understandable, you're useless.
The point of language is communication. Not spelling. Communication can be perfectly effective even if words are spelled wrong.

I see you left out the educated part. It's OK though.

The Einstein part is a myth. Has been completely debunked. thanks for trying though.
One, I'm on your side here. No need to attack me
Two, Einstein had to get help writing the formulas for special relativity just like Faraday had to get help with his work. No shame in it, math is kinda gay.

Not when they know they're being graded.

So if a teacher want to count of 50 pts for a misspelled word, you think it should be left up to the teacher? 20 pts? 30 pts?
Yes. The teacher will be fired if a high percentage of students fail their class, so they aren't going to make it that excessive. And while 10 points is harsh enough to encourage the students to pay extra special attention to their spelling, it isn't so excessive that a single error is going to result in failure.
I majored in engineering, so for a lot of our classes we would be allowed to create and bring a formula sheet for the tests which would then be stapled to and turned in with the tests. I had one professor that required everyone to place their signature on the formula sheet prior to turning it in, and if someone forgot to do it, he wouldn't even grade their test.....he just handed them a 0 like they never even took it. I still consider that to be a ridiculous policy, but guess what? It is his policy and he sticks to it (I personally got a 0 on a test for this reason and made a D in that class), and he doesn't give a shite if some butt hurt parent like you calls him to complain about it.
So if you want to continue to teach your son how to be a victim, go right ahead. But he would be much better served if you taught him to man up and own his mistakes, learn from them and do better in the future.....because at some point in life he is going to have someone that holds him accountable and won't give a shite if his daddy taught him that nothing was ever his fault.

Plenty of educated people are bad spellers. I wouldn't recommend misspelled words on a resume but for conveying thoughts, spelling is overrated.

Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, F Scott Fitzgerald, and others all did just fine without being good spellers. Spelling is the least important writing/English skill.
That's all fine and dandy but when I look at an email, application, document, whatever and there are misspelled words I automatically assume the person is not very bright. Misspelled words stick out like a sore thumb.
Anyways your son got an A. Not sure why you're all bent out of shape about it.
Do you proofread his homework before he turns it in?

That's just something lazy people say. You're either uneducated or lazy if you routinely misspell words in pretty much any setting. Spelling is only overrated to people that suck at it basically.
What you're saying is akin to saying math is overrated because there are machines that can do it for me.

Why write 300 words with advanced and complicated vocabulary, risk make 3 or 4 mistakes when one could write 75 simple words, and maybe lose a few points for lack of content, but have minimal risk of making any spelling errors?
