Should've spanked him when he was little.

Now he's calling the shots. You're fricked.

He does work at our restaurant...but it's usually two days a week. I am very proud of what he has accomplished at LSU. He's worked hard at finishing his degree...and he does have a good work ethic. I just ready him to start his "career". His personal income comes from either the tips he earns or occasionally from pay for working in the kitchen...he does not get paid for just existing. He does not live at home.

It honestly sounds like the kid knows what he wants, but just doesn't know the steps to get there.

I'm not sure getting a job as a bank teller will land him a job in high finance. I could be wrong.

It sounds more like you are looking for him to start working toward his future and establishing a career more than you are looking for him to stop living on your dime. I'm not saying you shouldn't want that for him and shouldn't help push him in the right direction, but IMO there's a BIG difference between worrying about his career and having him live on your dime.

FYI, have you guys thought about the possibility that an MBA with no experience or connections might work against him? He needs experience and connections more than another degree. If he can get that through an MBA program that's great. Otherwise, its just a piece of paper.

He's not interested in the MBA program. I know he could finish it easily...but he's not convinced it's as powerful a degree as it use to be. He's looking at a Masters in Analytics?

So he's not living at home, he is indeed working... are you supporting him financially?

I'm not too sure how many international trade and business entry level jobs there are in Baton Rouge... or Louisiana for that matter... I'm guessing slim to none.

What does he actually WANT to do? We know what his degree is in. Why did he go for that degree?

An MBA at this point is probably useless. He needs to get some job experience.

Perhaps he should go talk to one of his professors, or the LSU career center, to get advice on companies that may be hiring with that sort of degree. A lot of business and finance degrees these days hire through the schools before the kids graduate.

Sounds like the kid just needs to figure out what he wants to do. He needs to be making progress towards that, for sure. But this doesn't seem nearly as bad as your first post indicated it to be.

Then how is he on your dime? He is an employee who gets paid for the work he does. If he wants to live that life while he finds the job he wants, let him figure it out on his own. Unless he is a hindrance to you in some way (which it doesn't sound like he is since he takes care of all of his own shite), stay out of his business. If it isn't affecting your bottom line more than any other employee would in his position, don't worry about his timeline.

Pretty relevant for today's market. Check out this article I found in Forbes:

LINK

If he has no experience doing data analysis, he should try to find an internship doing that instead of working at the restaurant. Treat it like it is part of his graduate education. When he finishes, the year of experience will look better than the wasted year as a server.

Now that I've figured out y'alls problems, I'll get back to my own.

The Analytics program at LSU is good. I graduated this past year. Everyone in the class who made even a half-assed attempt got a good job. I think the average salary was a bit over $80k. We had recruiters from Deloitte, EY, Ericsson, CenturyLink, BCBS, Entergy, Lynda.com, USAA, and several mid-level consulting groups.

But make him pay for it himself.

He needs to get a job. Doesnt matter if it's not his major or what he wants. He needs to provide for himself and start to earn a nest egg.
