They said about 2/3 of folks with narcolepsy get it, and it can be triggered by anxiety, stress and depression.
This is interesting because the only other person I actually know with it has narcolepsy.
And yes, stress and anxiety are a huge contributor to it.

Sleep paralysis occurs when the mind wakes up but the body remains asleep.
This sums it up perfectly and shows why it's scary. You are awake and alert of things but your body isn't responding to anything you want to do..

I have had this kind as well. I am trying everything in me to scream/shout for help and I just can't. it's like mentally you are going through it, but physically it's not coming out.

Paint your porch haint blue. That boo hag ridin' ya.
Seriously, though, I believe sleep paralysis and falling dreams where you jolt awake are related to sleep apnea. I've had neither since I got a CPAP. Might want to get checked out.

I saw Hatman 4 nights in one week back in the late 1990s. It was terrifying. I was living in a little cabin at a summer camp during their off season while I went to school. He got closer each night. By the third night he was looming right over the bed. The fourth night I called out to God and it disappeared. I haven't seen it since.
The really chilling thing was that a couple of years later I was talking to two other people that had lived there in the past and it was clear they had both separately experienced the phenomenon and they were both still terrified by the experience.
I am all for it being a mundane sleep related issue, but it sure is a hell of a coincidence that 3 people had the same experience in the same place at separate times.

My sleep paralysis came with intense pain in my arm the other night. I was sleeping and had an "episode".
I saw this dark blob on my ceiling even blocking out a portion of the fan, it grew bigger and eventually took up the whole ceiling. It wasn't like a uniform color, but looked like tiny currents of these black and dark grey shapes running in and out, constantly shifting and changing shape. Eventually they formed up in the middle and began a slow descent to my bed, building a tower from the ceiling reaching out to me but feeling around from side to side as if it didn't know exactly where I was in the room.
Eventually it started moving directly at me on my bed. I was terrified but also felt like it was calling to me, and then I reached out my right hand to try and touch this presence and when my hand was about to make contact, I felt this flash of searing pain run up my arm and scared the frick out of me, felt like I couldn't breathe and was dying before waking up.
I've had other episodes where I had the normal, feel a presence in the corner, can't move, but this was different. It also could have been a dream I suppose but it felt so real and I still remember it cearly.
ETA: One time I had it and it was a long episode before I knew what it was, I was flipping out in my mind and all. Somehow my dog must of sensed I was having some problems because he came to the bed and licked me on the face and woke me up. So anyone having problems with this, get a good, smart dog

You need to change up your routine, and get a good workout in with cardio before you take a shower and go to bed at night. I was experiencing the same shite.

Lay off the Ambien bruh.

Man, I get that shite from time to time. Typically when I'm stressed out more than normal. Haven't gotten it in about a year though, which is awesome considering that I used to get it about three times a week.
There's this documentary (or there used to be) on Netflix titled "The Nightmare" very interesting and talks about how different people coped with sleep paralysis. Give it a look.

Happy to report last night was fine.
Thanks for all the support stories. It seems stress has been mentioned a lot and I would have to agree the intensification period over the last few months for me has coincided with increased stress.
Also, someone mentioned astral projecting. I had to go google it. In one instance a few years ago I had something similar happen. I knew what was going on and instead of attempting to wake up I took control of the dream and had more of an out of body experience floating in our bedroom and around the house. Somehow that transitioned in to actual dreaming that went to the far reaches of my imagination. I never did wake up from the paralysis and I assumed I just transitioned into deep sleep.

A good dog will wake you up. I had a bad nightmare. Woke up dog was next to me growling at the ceiling.

This happens to me a couple of times a year. Basically, I become fully conscious while asleep and sense something hovering over me. There is a really intense feeling that feels evil to me. I try to force my eyes open. Sometimes it works quickly, but sometimes I am stuck for a minute or so. I have never felt like it move me, just a hovering presence. shite is scary.

I would be way more creeped out if I went through this and woke up to my dog growling at something. I dismiss this as just something in my head, dog growling makes it real...

That's not you spinning, its the room. Used to happen to me a few times when I drank too much. Just put your foot down on the floor....and maybe cut back on the hooch.

I made an account just to respond here. I have sleep paralysis often. If I nap during the day at all, I almost immediately hit REM sleep before my body is fully “asleep”.
Sometimes it comes with this odd buzzing/vibrating sensation that starts near my eyebrows and if I relax it moves down the center of my body eventually reaching my toes. Auditory hallucinations are common. The night terrors are old hat by this point. If I open my eyes during sleep paralysis and see something, I just remember to look at my dog. If she is calm, I know I can go back to sleep.
Do you take melatonin? Alcohol? Any supplement at all? Drink milk or have any sugary food within hours of bed?

I'll get up and watch TV for a couple of hours, get some water and maybe a snack, and try again later. SP isn't real sleep anyway. Your body is not benefitting from it and you know, aliens.

I'm not sure if this was SP or not, but I once had a dream where I woke up to a huge spider on the ceiling directly over my head. That bugger started descending down toward my face. I couldn't move my body, just my head, so as he got closer and closer, I started violently shaking my head left and right. I woke up right before he landed on my face. I typically don't remember my dreams, but this one was vivid.
Does anyone else have an issue where you're on the verge of falling asleep and your entire body convulses, waking you up? I do this all the time.

I’ve had it a few times.
One sticks out.
It was 2010, I was working nights at Harrahs in New Orleans staying with my friends parents, so obviously I slept during the day.
I bought a queen sized air mattress until my buddy and I got into our apartment. one morning he got up and left the bedroom door open, next thing I know I’m wide awake staring at the room, can’t move an inch.
Freddy Kruger casually walks into the room, calmly closes the door staring at me, then takes his time making his way towards me. Stares at me some more, then drives his claw hands into my chest.
I wake up to the bedroom door closed, and my brand new air mattress flat to the ground.

I've heard practicing good sleep habits can reduce the frequency
quote:This is the truth. I have dreams that cause me to run out of the room because I open my eyes and see people/things coming to attack me that aren't actually in the room. So not quite sleep paralysis, but still terrifying. I've had to experiment a lot to limit these episodes. Limiting TV at night, and particularly limiting violent/graphic TV before bed (e.g. Game of Thrones), not eating or drinking too late (particularly if it's red meat) before bed, avoiding screens right before bed, and keeping the house cold and air circulating with a fan all help me. Also if there's any light in the room, the shadows help to create the vivid imagery in the dream since my eyes are open, so I try to black out the room as much as possible. Good luck with it all; it's not fun.
going to bed at the same time every night
abstaining from caffeine in the afternoon
avoiding tv / computer screens an hour before you go to bed, etc.
ETA: Also, I cut out a lot of sugar/carbs from my diet and upped the proteins and fats like they say to do, and that seemed to help with my sleep quality as well for whatever reason.
