It happens everyday. It's part of being a grown up.

AMEX is awesome for these situations, but they are also way too protective. They cancel your card with the quickness if you put a couple of expensive things on it within an hour of each other.

They'll do it if the charges are out of the ordinary for the card, if you regularly make 5 figure purchased it won't be a problem.

Apparently they run a small charge to see if the card is legit and then try to charge a large one

Yep. They all do it. Several years ago my bank called me because someone charged like $700 to officechairs.com or some shite like that. Who uses a stolen card number to purchase office chairs? Lol

Excatly. It depends on your history with them.

I've never had them call me but I can see why they would for some people that don't use their card very often and then all of a sudden there are big purchases in a city that the cardholder doesn't usually charge from.

My bank will put a hold on my debit card before my AMEX will call me.

No they don't.

I don't think they will cancel the card at all until speaking with you first. At least that's been my experience over the last 15 years, even with an occasional fraudulent charge.

They alert you to the activity and if you don't respond they freeze it. Then its very easy to unfreeze it.

Won't cancel without your permission in my experience. I have had a lady call me a couple times after big purchases and even pronounced my French last name correctly

ETA:

They have a simple algorithm they use to diagnose each card member's "normal" activity. If you're outside of that, they send you an alert.

Chase Sapphire card has been the cream of the crop so far. Someone tried to buy pizzas in 5 different states all at the same time. Not one charge went through. Called me immediately and sent a new card.

I had a fraudulent charge on my Visa a few weeks back. And the idiots made two back to back charges for the same thing. Labeled it as government services or some crap. There was a phone number for the charge showing up on the statement. Almost didn't worry about it because it was two $15 charges. Called the number and knew it was BS, so called Visa. They changed my credit card account and investigated from there.first time I've ever had any type of fraud occur.

Couple of years ago, Chase VISA contacted my wife about her credit card. Asked her if she had made several purchases over the past couple days in New York City. My wife says no. There were 4 days of purchases in Lafayette, LA and New York City at several department stores and pharmacies on the same days and it took them 4 days to figure this out.

My Capital One debit card number was stolen before it even got to my mailbox. $1400 charged, took 2 weeks to get it back while they "conducted an official investigation" which seems to be bank legalese for removing their head from their arse.

I use a debit card to withdraw cash, which isn't often. Otherwise it's the AMEX for everything else.

My wife has it set up so we get a text whenever a card is not physically used with Amex. So anything over the phone, web etc we get notified.

I got a call about my card being used a couple of states away and called us as they felt that was suspicious, someone had made a fake card.

I love Amex
