Kid probably felt like these guys have done this before and won't take it too far. All of these guys wouldn't do anything to intentionally harm me. There would be a minimal expectation of a safety.
When I was a pledge, I was held under a beer truck tap and drank until they pulled me away from it. Nobody ever made me drink hard liquor.
One active wouldn't sign two of my pledge brother' paddles. One football Saturday afternoon, we kidnapped him, gagged him, bagged him, tied him up and drove him out to one of the guys' dad's camps. We had stolen one of the kegs the actives had for the post-game party. After we got him in the camp we spent a couple of hours trying to get him drunk, but he wasn't willing. We took him outside and tied him to a tree. Poured gasoline around him and the tree, lit it and handed him the paddle. He signed it in haste. We untied him, bagged and gagged him again and took him home. We pissed the whole chapter off and paid a price for it, but it after we were initiated they told us it was the balliest thing any pledge class had ever done.

There is absolutely nothing cool at all about the story you posted. What a bunch of idiots. And it is shite like this that gives the "frat-haters" the ammo to question why these organizations exist.
But if that is your idea of a good time, then to each his own I guess.

If I were in charge, I'd ban them tomorrow. There's literally no justification for a public university to sanction them. Give me one good reason why they should exist.
ETA: I bet I get more down votes than reasons.

They give back to universities at a higher rate than those not in fraternities.

By what measure? There are lots of ways to give back to universities.

The only way that matters, alumni monetary donations.

At any point in time did you ever stop and think you may be going too far?

I have learned that most people want to be in fraternities so they can say they are in a fraternity. Period.

shite like this is why frats are eventually going to get banned all together one day in the not too far future.
It's stupid shite like that, that gives frat haters the leverage they need to finally kill them.
I can understand how fraternities can bond men together and be good networking for good jobs but stupid crap like that is fricked up at best and pure evil at worst.
Stop it.

Is this story supposed to be sad? Because it is. At what point did tying someone to a tree and lighting a fire around them become sport?
All in the name of some Greek fraternity which I would wager has few that have ever been to Greece...I am bummed now. Thanks.
