About a half an hour without traffic for Alexandria. If you're talking the Rosslyn portion or Arlington more like 45 mins

Old Town is the best part of Alexandria but for $800-$1000 you won't get much there. Arlington has more areas to choose from (Rosslyn, Pentagon City, Clarendon, etc...)

My daughter lives on the outskirts of DC....on Andrew's AFB. It's not that far away and with the drive it's usually pretty quick.

I can't think of the communities she's mentioned but I'll ask her tomorrow.

on Andrew's AFB. It
pretty sure that is on the opposite side of DC and will be of no help to this guy

But do you have pics of said daughter?

I live in Arlington. 950 sq ft APT not on metro is $1765.

Move out toward Alexandria is safest bet.

Dude. Why the hell would you move to Lorton? Trust me when I say no. My commute is 3 miles to Rosslyn. It's pretty amazing.

Because my office is in Lorton. Commuting from Arlington is 40ish minutes one way.

I've heard living in Arlington/Alexandria is best for young people.

This is correct, which is odd considering that nobody can afford to live here without doubling up. I live two blocks away from Courthouse Metro and yes, living here is awesome. And very expensive. Old Town Alexandria is even more so.

I've also heard that traffic is bad, but I'd be commuting out of DC in the morning, and into DC at night...going against traffic if you will.

That won't help as much as you'd think. It merely turns a nightmare into something tolerable. It isn't unusual for people to work odd hours, like 6am - 3pm or noon to 9pm just so they can avoid the worst traffic.

You might want to pick a place where you can bike to a VRE or Springfield Metro. Bike commuting is pretty common here. Be aware that VRE service is almost entirely northbound in the morning and southbound in the evening, being near a Metro stop will facilitate your single skirt-chasing lifestyle much better than VRE.

how old are you?

interests?

I live in Alexandria but I lived in Arlington(Ballston) when I first moved to the area. It was fun but once i hit 27 I felt I was too old to live in Arlington anymore

in Alexandria check out Del Ray, Old town, Potomac Yard(though I think it's over priced)

Lorton from Alexandria would be a reverse commute but traffic can be unpredictable sometimes

I'd check out Old Town as well as the high rises west on Eisenhower.

I live by the mixing bowl and I go out and drink/socialize all the time. You don't HAVE to live in the middle of the action to have fun. So also check out Springfield(near the town center) as well as Kingstowne

Check out Unitedsocialsports.com for different leagues. I did softball and basketball this past fall and it was fun. I'm playing softball this winter in the national mall, should be nice and miserable out

Thanks for your help. Someone in this thread said Springfield can be sketchy, any comment? How does Kingstown differ, they look right next to each other.

I live in NOLA, seriously doubt D.C. is worse.
you'll find the people that live here will talk about areas not to go to because they're bad areas and I'm like I grew up in Shreveport, none of these areas are "bad"

it's all relative. "sketchy" compared to Georgetown or compared to the 9th ward? My physician is in Springfield, I do a lot of shopping/visiting bars in Springfield. It's totally fine.

Kingstowne is sorta a master planned CDP full of townhouses, single family homes, and apartments. Plenty of bars, restaurants, etc. My favorite Indian restaurant is there. I have a friend that owns a condo there and we meet up at a local Irish pub. Your commute would be pretty easy from either of those spots.
