with the ability to work remotely, it seems cities need even bigger competitive advantages if they want to retain and gain a good work force.
No one in the comments has yet to really lay out a compelling reason to move to BR, and I honestly can't either.
Aside from football allegiances, I don't think many people would choose BR over Birmingham if given the choice.

Broome is a result of the problem, not the problem itself.

Birmingham proper has a lot of the same problems that plague BR. It has a better economy and far nicer suburbs though.

People always ask me if I would move back to BR and maybe work at LSU (professor) in my old department if I got the chance. My parents love to push this idea too.
I strongly tell them no. I loved growing up in BR at the times I was a kid and loved my time at LSU but 20 years out, the city and LSU have changed for the far worse. I wouldn’t even want to work there in the current climate and I was as big of an LSU fan as you’d find back in the day.
City has just regressed majorly and it doesn’t look like there is any signs of it changing. Sad too, because I loved Baton Rouge from 20 years ago.

Baton Rouge is an absolute shithole and just re-elected the most dysfunctional and incompetent mayor it has ever had.
Baton Rouge isn't paradise, but anyone who deems it a shithole clearly hasn't ever actually lived in a shithole.

That’s silly. BR has regressed from 10 years ago, but is far better than it was 20 years ago. Do y’all not remember how f$&king depressing and scary 90’s BR was? The murder rate was crazy, there were giant abandoned buildings everywhere like what is now the downtown Hilton and the Crowne Plaza hotel. Downtown was a ghost town back then!
BR really was on a massive upswing from 2005 to 2016, but Alton Sterling, the Flood, and Broome ended the boom.

The murder rate is higher now than it's ever been, even in the 90s.

“Massive” upswing is more of a term to describe Nashville, Austin, Denver, Charlotte, etc...the last 15-20 years.

My employer is based out of Ellick. They are on a hiring frenzy and have brought on many people from out of state that intend on moving there. They will have a culture shock and likely be gone within a year.
Life is pretty bearable here in Youngsville if you can handle roundabout traffic. People can hate all they want.... it's one the best places right now in LA to raise a family.

Move to Prairievile. Better school, lower crime rate, and no idiot mayor.

I don't like Broome but how many cities this size or larger have conservative Republican mayors?
El Paso is the only one I can think of.
ETA: Fort Worth as well.

My point was simply that it's not uncommon to have a blue city in a red state. It's more the norm than the exception.
