I have no idea about rental rates in Brusly vs EBR, but the headache it will save you will be worth every penny. There is a reason there is such a strong suggestion in this thread to live on the west side.

Work for CBI, not Shintech themselves. No relocation unless you're way up the ladder there.

Already got the guns covered, no way to live without one this day and age without at least one no matter where you live.

Pierre Part is not out of the question for me, beautiful country out there. Not sure about the webbed feet and banjo, though

Don't

If committed already, move to the LP or the AP and become very proficient with your handgun.

Move to Gross Tete on any other of the half dozen small communities near there. Hell, New Roads is a nice area if you don't mind sending your kid to a private school.

Jokes are great, and the best the ones are based on tragedy. Like for instance three BRPD officers kidnapping a woman, raping her and getting acquitted due to lack of evidence after no investigation outside of BRPD. But anyone reading this has access to Google, they should probably check there.

Google tried to steal my middle child over the web. Do you have any alternate search engines? I'm still a little tepid on the Google machine.

I'm making a little more than $1500/week over what I was making at the last job, that's FU money in my life. And it's not a permanent move either. Once the job is over I'm on my way to the next one

Trying my best to keep rent around 1500 a month. I'll have to look into some of these places yall are naming. Appreciate all the advice and warnings.

With a 1500 budget, you can probably rent a decent (relatively new) starter house in denham springs or central, or if you favor a house in BR proper, an older house in mid city.

The current BR administration considers criminals as the victims. Gotta protect yourself from them and the current Mayor.

You ain't lying on that part. Absolutely ridiculous what some of these places want considering what they are.

For clarification, not looking to move INTO Baton Rouge, but rather the surrounding suburbs/cities.

Serious reply from someone who moved to Baton Rouge from the midwest 5+ years ago:

You have a 1 year old kid, you don't have to worry about schools for another 3-5 years.

My wife works in West Baton Rogue Parish and we live in East Baton Rouge Parish, specifically the Inniswold area. Even with the traffic she has to deal with every day working a 7-4 job we would never consider moving to WBR/Greenwell Springs/Ascension Parish- but that's just us. We like having a social life outside of our home, and prefer the architecture of the homes in the city-parish of Baton Rouge to the outlying suburbs.

I would recommend leasing an apartment for a year or so until you feel out the area. A lot of the complexes in the Jefferson Highway/Corporate boulevard area are fine enough. Avoid anything near LSU campus or Gardere. Stay South of I-12/Airline Hwy, North of Highland, and east of College/Lee and you will be fine. Once you get a feel for the area and decide what you like, pick a neighborhood. There are actually plenty of houses in the Westminster/Pine Park/Inniswold area for rent and these are excellent neighborhoods.

I would avoid suburban sprawl cookie cutter home DR Horton-type subdivisions where the houses are on top of each other if you're buying. You can find nice architecturally sound aesthetically pleasing acadian style homes at a similar price point and will probably have much better resale value down the line.

Actually, LINK is a much better resource for questions like this than the O-T fwiw. Good luck!

Moving to Baton Rouge soon

quote:

Going to be working in Plaquemine

Don't do this to yourself. If you're working on the West Bank, live on the west bank. Commuting across the river, especially from south of the Intracoastal Canal, is murder.

Just straight up don't do it.

If you're dead set on living in town, though, I recommend the following neighborhoods:
1. The Garden District - this is the area roughly bordered by Park Blvd, Acadian, and Government Street.
2. Capitol Heights - Runs from Acadian to Jefferson along Government Street
3. Old Goodwood Bordered by Jefferson, Florida, Lobdell, and Cloud
4. Southdowns/Lakeview - bordered by I-10, LSU Lakes, Lee, and Highland.
5. Downtown - primarily between Government Street, the interstate, the river, and the Capital. Broken up into two residential areas Beauregard Town and Spanish Town.

The oaks are stately, magnolias are broad, and the halls of the homes are inspiring. Close walk to the Canes Dog Park, City Park Golf Course, Radio Bar, St. Patty's Day Parade Route, the Overpass Bars, Atomic Pop Shop, and a slightly longer walk to LSU. Property Crime is a problem the closer you are to Park.

Capitol Heights puts you within walking distance of grocery stores, restaurants, and White Lights Night/Hot Art Cool Nights. Second fastest for getting to the bridge. Lots of cute bungalos that are rediculously overpriced.

Old Goodwood is a little further down government street from Capitol Heights, so everything is still in walking distance, but a slightly longer walk (with the exception of the shopping centers with Brew-ha-ha and Reginelli's). The north side of govt is cheaper for a reason, as the opposite side of Florida is a war zone. However, it's still pretty safe. The houses in this neighborhood are not as cute, and are often 60's and 70's style ranch homes. It's an extra 5/10 minutes down government street.

Southdowns has more traffic issues than the first two due to student traffic on Stanford and just normal slit your wrist traffic on Perkins. However, it's a little cheaper than the Garden District and has a little less crime. It also has the Southdowns shopping center and the Perkins Overpass area within walking distance.

Downtown is really nice these days if you can snag one of the small houses in Beauregard Town north of Government or along Spanish Town Road. The houses are gorgeous, festivals, bars, and restaurants within walking distances are numerous, and downtown even has a grocery store now. There are also multiple high rise apartment buildings going up like crazy if you're into that. Crime has really evaporated north of government over the past 10 years. Spanish Town is the city's famous gay neighborhood. 3rd street has most of the bars. South of government is gentrifying rapidly, but may still be a little more dodgy than you may be ready for. This will be the fastest route to the new bridge, and the fastest to the old bridge. You will also have quick access to the safety valve that is the River Road to get to the ferry.

But seriously, don't work across the river from your home. There are nice neighborhoods in some places on the Wank. Find them.

Brusly is ok. Pierre Part is far, but you can live on the water for cheap if you're trashy. Plaquemine is kinda a pretty town. White Castle is a dump.
Donaldsonville is a sh$thole. You could probably buy a dilapidated 18th century mansion near the Grapevine and restore it, though. If you're going to live on the West Bank, make sure you live south of the Intracoastal Canal, so Port Allen would be a no-go.

I would like to amend this statement to say that this depends on you and your family's personality- and spend time on both sides of the river to see which suits your personality better.

Maybe a bit revealing here that he/she named 6 cities west of the river and shite on at least 4 of them. Remember that there are plenty of good people living in every city and your intuition and gut feeling will probably be more valuable than a random post on here. Good luck again.

Dude, he'll be working in Plaquemine. There's not a lot of good options on that side of the river, but he'll be 45 minutes minimum from decent neighborhoods in Baton Rouge even if he's the only car on the road. That stretch of highway gets shut down daily, turning 45 minutes one way to 3 hours or more. It's just miserable and no way to live. Plaq is the least convenient place one is likely to have a job near Baton Rouge.

There's simply not a lot of people on the west bank, and most are pretty poor.
Donaldsonville was a wealthy town pre-Civil War, but is a poor, crime-ridden majority black town run by the mob today. Cost of living is cheap as is property, but the schools are terrible and much of the housing stock is delapidated 18th century mansions that need tens of thousands of dollars in renovations to avoid collapse.
White Castle is a smaller, poorer D-ville without the pretty buildings.
Addis and Brusly are both ok blue collar small towns.
Pierre Part is a fun place for a houseboat camp, but I don't know about living there full time.
Plaquemine is a lot like D-ville, but a little smaller, a little cleaner, and a little less crime ridden. It's ok. There are some nice neighborhoods for such a sleepy little town.

That is literally all of the towns south of the intracoastal canal within 30 minutes from his work.

The only thing worse than crossing the I-10 bridge every day is crossing the intracoastal canal bridge too.

Well OP, if anyone tells you it takes 45 minutes to get to a good neighborhood from Plaquemine, they are wrong.

If anyone tells you that you will EVER have a 3 hour commute, they are wrong.

Just check google map data and the city-data link I posted earlier.
