Beach. Not because of the beach itself, but because those are the only two choices you gave and I already want to move to Santa Monica area ..and there just so happens to be beaches nearby. Well, mountains too I guess.

A lot of money, and yall are buying in grand isle, destin or galveston?
I would buy a ranch near salida, CO. Its awesome there. And just rent beach front places.

Beach. Nothing like the smell of salty air in the morning

You've come into a lot of money and never have to work again. Where do you build that dream home you and the Mrs always talked about? Beach or Mountain?
Think this is what I love most about California, you get both so close to one another.
Albeit the beaches aren't Hawaii or Florida esque, cold and filled with man eating sharks an shite.

Mountains and it's not close. Beaches attract a lot more trashiness.
so do the mountains. Mountain towns are full of druggies

I'd build two reasonably sized homes in both locations, and rent out the home I wasn't staying in at the time.

Some place warm, a place where the beer flows like wine, where beautiful women instinctively flock like the salmon of Capistrano. I’m talking about a little place called Aspen.

My Dad has a ranch in the Paradise Valley, near Livingston.
I would love to own this ranch, and would make an offer if I was married:

Went to a wedding in Paradise Valley last Summer... a few miles south of Emigrant. Beautiful area.
