I’ve never understood why a husband is expected to buy their wife something on Mother’s Day. She’s my kids mother not mine. That’s their job. I still take her out to eat though.

Maybe just to appreciate that she helped bring your child into the world and because it is nice to do things for people you love.

OK - I'm in.

My mother is 97 years old (will be 98 in November). Last December (12-15-18) she received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Alabama.

I was lucky enough to find (on eBay) a copy of the U of Alabama yearbook (The Corolla) from 1943 - the year she would have graduated had she not withdrawn from school to be with my dad as he underwent flight training to become a B-17 pilot in WWII (He flew 33 combat missions over Germany and Romania).

She's also getting the usual dozen long stem red roses. My dad always gave her roses - but he died in 1999 (after 57 years of marriage), so I always step in with flowers for her birthday and for Mother's Day.

None of us five kids went to Alabama - thought this woudld kill my dad. Three Miss State, one LSU and One Arkansas. But it was cool to have Coach Bryant stop in and visit with my dad anytime he was near Vicksburg (where we grew up).

Bryant recruited my dad. Bryant came from similar background in Arkansas. Tough as nails country boys who were the first in their families to attend college.

Times were different then, They weren't called the greatest generation for no reason. My mother and my dad were the first in their families to attend college. They both grew up in the middle of the Great Depression.

This is too long already. I doubt anyone is interested in how she managed to get her diploma. And how my dad became close friends with Coach Bryant & Kenny Stabler. Their story reads like fiction, but it's 100% true. Maybe I'll add some later.

TL;DR. Granny got her diploma. Grandpa made it back from the war. 57 years of marriage and 5 kids.
