You're a bit off the mark here.

not off the mark at all, in fact im dead on point

mom knew the bill wasnt going to be cheap, hence her decision to refuse treatment and take her herself. after daughter dies she wants to blame someone else for her own bad decisions

you dont need to know the exact price to know if you are poor, you cant afford it and want to avoid that expense. in this case being cheap cost her her daughters life and now she wants someone else to blame and of course throwing out the race card is step one

What you think are facts...they're not facts. They're opinions.

More of those not facts.

Well? Could she? If not, they weren't treated poorly because they were black. They were treated the way they were treated because they were poor, and just happened to be black and named Black.

I could be wrong, but I don't think it's their job to assess whether someone can afford the ambulance service.

The woman's story could be complete BS, but the defenses some of you are using are bogus.

Well, when you consider the medics botched all of their actual duties for this call, is it bullshite?

None of this sounds good for the medics but there is always 2 sides. The lady may have refused treatment and also refused to sign a refusal. I guess the question is, is there no documentation or is there documentation but not signed by patient or family? Also, I’ve seen first hand news reports post very off the base and untrue stories about fire departments and ambulance services.

ETA: I’ve had people call 911 only to refuse signing my documentation that they didn’t wanna be transported. I still fill it out and sign it

To be fair here there was implied consent, no reason the mom should have been able to refuse at all. This is an unconscious adult female living on her own. Unless mom showed legal documents stating otherwise this is botched.

quote:

Patient Consent: The conscious, mentally competent adult has the right to accept or refuse emergency medical care. Thus, always make sure that the patient consents before beginning emergency care. There are three types of consents: expressed, implied, and that which deals with a minor. Expressed consent is made by conscious, mentally competent adults. Implied consent is automatically assumed if a patient is unresponsive or unable to make a rational decision (e.g. altered mental status). To treat a minor, an EMT must obtain the consent of the parent or guardian. If the parent or guardian is unreachable, then implied consent is assumed.

Word

To clarify what I'm saying when I say the medics botched it, i have no clue if they refused service or said anything about her affording it.

Just basing it on the facts that the Ambulance company have given us, we know they botched a few things with that call.

Obviously the idea that they refused service because she couldnt afford seems extremely farfetched. But when you hear all the things they did or didn't do including lying and not even showing they ran on the call, if you're being truly objective, you can't 100% rule it out that they may have done such a thing.

In statements released by the county, the responders described helping Ms. Galloway down the stairs of her home and placing her into Ms. Black’s car, but they denied refusing to take her.

“By the time we realized that no information was obtained, the mother had already left the scene,” Lieutenant Morris wrote.

He said that Ms. Black was “adamant” she would take her daughter to the emergency room and that “at no point would I advise against a person being transported by our rescue.”

Derrik Ryan, president of Hillsborough County Firefighters Local 2294, said Ms. Black’s description of what happened was “not factual.” He said that the medical workers did not “talk her out of going to the hospital” and that they did not talk about the cost of the ambulance trip.

Mr. Ryan called the assertion that race played a role in their interactions “totally ridiculous.”

He acknowledged that the medical workers failed to get Ms. Galloway’s vitals and should have gotten Ms. Black to sign a document stating that they would not be taking Ms. Galloway to the hospital. He said that a medical worker mistakenly entered into a report that they didn’t reach Ms. Galloway.

“Did we make minor mistakes on that call? Absolutely,” Mr. Ryan said. “We did not kill that lady and we did not refuse to transport that lady.”

Mr. Merrill said two Hillsborough County sheriff’s deputies who also responded that night had some discussion with Ms. Black about the cost of transporting her daughter to the hospital.

In a statement, a sheriff’s office spokesman said Ms. Black had asked one of the deputies if emergency medical workers would take Ms. Galloway to the hospital and if she would have to pay for the transport. According to the statement, the deputy responded affirmatively to both questions but did not further discuss the ambulance or its cost with Ms. Black.

After Ms. Black filed a complaint, the sheriff’s office conducted a review and “determined no violations of agency policy or standards occurred,” the statement read.

That's basically exactly what I'm trying to get at replying to others who are 100% certain that it never happened.

The company said there was no form signed, they did not indicate anything about a refusal. I imagine they would have it had happened, but we don't know for sure because of how poorly the run was recorded by the medics. They didn't even record that they ran the call, so obviously they didn't record a signature that service was refused, or record a refusal to sign said refusal document either.

Good point.

I guess it's possible that the daughter had regained consciousness and was aware enough to make that call on her own, but no clue obviously.

They didn't but she had a conversation with a sheriff deputy. Her story sounds bogus but the lack of documentation may bite those EMTs in the arse.

Yeah I'm skeptical that they refused to bring her daughter over the potential bill ($600 seems awfully low for advanced life support care also), but it's possible.

ya sure, im sure its so much more likely that she is telling the truth and the ambulance driver ran a credit check on the mom and told her she cant afford the rate for transport to the hospital so we arent taking her there

you are so twisted and contorted trying to defend her claims that you might get hurt and need to go to the hospital yourself

I didn't say it was more likely that she was telling the truth, what are you even talking about right now? I like how you went with 3 laughing emoticons for something you just made up out of the blue.

Man, wrong again. I've said all along I have no clue what the truth is.

It's almost like you're really biased in one direction that you keep seeing things that aren't there. Go figure.
