1) War of 1812---Our country was invaded by a foreign power and the capital was burned

2) Civil War---Literally taking up arms against each other in an attempt establish a breakaway confederacy of former states

3) WW II----Multiple military installations struck in a surprise attack which resulted in fighting a war on multiple continents

4) Toss up amongst multiple events

I didnt think the Revolution technically fit the topic. Just an opinion, cancertainly argue that it did bc we recognize our nations birth as 7/4/1776.

So, is this an alternate universe where 9/11 never happened?

Not even close for the nation or probably not even even cops, for that matter. The time of rising organized crime during prohibition and the depression seemed like it was spectacularly bad for cops. The criminal (AKA the mob) were better armed and better organized than most of the cops.

The use by bank robbers and mobsters of the Thompson sub-machine gun directly resulted in the laws regarding fully automatic weapons.

I know I know

I decided to leave 9/11 off at first because it was a one day event and wasn't a direct threat to destroy america but in hindsight, it certainly has changed the fabric of american society and ushered in a new war on terrorism.

I should have included it

Oh I wasn't trying to nitpick, I was just picking one thing out of thin air that was more trying

You covered more than sufficient ground to show how foolish the statement was

Yeah, that statement is a bit out there.

If you lump in the recent terrorist attacks in Europe with political turmoil, social turmoil, and protests at home, it's maybe what I imagined 1968 may have felt like.

My local police department put out a Facebook post saying that the last couple of months have been the most trying in our nations history. In regards to the police shootings. Anybody else think that is a overstatement? For law enforcement maybe, but for the nation as a whole.....no

Complete overstatement. I'd rank these times as being far worse....

1. Civil War
2. American Revolution (which was pretty much also a civil War)
3. Great Depression
4. World War II
5. Panic of 1873
6. Panic of 1893
7. Depression of 1920
8. Great Recession
9. Cuban Missile Crisis or 9/11 (tie)
10. Stagflation in the 1970s

You can blame both sides of the political aisle for this BS. Hell, people are literally walking around with hats that say "Make America Great Again," as if there was ever a better time in our history than the present.

As for the police, the last month or so has sucked, but only relative to the long term trend of safety for LEOs.

In 1970, 220 police officers were killed in the line of duty, roughly 1 in every 1450 LEOs. In fact, only once in the 1970s did the annual death toll drop below 200 LEOs.

In 2016, we're on pace for the second lowest tally of LEO deaths since 1956. The death rate is also down to roughly 1 in every 9000 LEOs. It has never been safer to be a cop than it is today.
