66 hours sophomore year of college. Thought I was going to die

over 48 hours.....basically my brain turned to shite. I had to drive 30 minutes back home before I could sleep.
As someone that has drank and driven in my youth I can tell you driving after that long with no sleep is far more dangerous than .16 BAC.
I don't advocate that anyone do either.

I literally did it
And many other parents of infants do it, as well. I have friends who went back to work when their baby still wasn't sleeping at all, maybe in 1 hour patches overnight. They managed although they were miserable and tired. People forget that if you're breastfeeding, you can't just always fall right back asleep.
Baby wakes up, change him, feed him for almost an hour (torture), then by that point put him back to sleep and then I would try to go back to sleep. Sometimes it took me 30-45 to fall asleep Bc I would wake myself up by reading or playing a game (was scared I would drop him otherwise), then he would be back up an hour later to eat. Repeat several times.
That happened for 6-8 weeks.

In the past I have felt so tired that when I went to bed, it was difficult for me to fall asleep. I think it is a mental thing, since it didn't happen right away I got frustrated and kept thinking about if I can't fall asleep..

Do you sleep in your chair or does someone have to hoist you into bed

I also have had that same frustration of being so tired you can't fall asleep. Went to Italy and I went almost 55 hours not sleeping--jet lag, not being capable of sleeping on planes. Then when it was finally time to sleep, I laid there miserably exhausted and grew more irritated by the moment that I wasn't falling asleep. Ended up not sleeping at all that night. The next day in the Vatican I felt like I was hallucinating. It's crazy how when you're that exhausted, it can be hard to sleep.

So I assume there are nights when you fall asleep 30-45mins before you have to wake up right? Sometimes that feels worse than not going to sleep. If I am still up an hour or hour and a half before its time to get up, I will just stay awake, but there have been times when I finally end up falling asleep right before its time to wake up.

You unbuckle your seatbelt and roll real fast towards the bed?

Yes, I got to hit it at just the right speed or I will hang out half way off the bed.

That is not the exception, that's the RULE for me! Still many nights I can't sleep and I finally fall asleep around 4 only to have to be up for 5. It's cruel.

This one was a solid 3 days straight without a wink
But have had other multi-day stretches with minimal sleep

almost 3 myself, back when my wife and I were dating, she had bad insomnia and would go a week or 2 with about 8 total hours between them both - but she once went like a week with no sleep
