Morganza spillway to be opened?

Projected crest of Mississippi river for BTR is 44ft on 1/19/16. Will we see another opening of the spillway? For reference, in 2011 the MR crested at 45 ft in BTR. My guess is yes, but who knows.

We always here the doom and gloom prognostications of what happens if the Old River Control Structure fails.
Why not build a new river control structure?

Yes they will open spillway.
River will go higher than 44' with a lot more rain expected. 2011 opened at 45'

Passed over it a couple days ago and there were a couple guys that looked like they were taking some soundings on both sides. With all the work that was done after last opening, it did a lot of under mining and buckled the bridge. There is a good leakage that now flows thru the locks and I really think if they open the locks, they just might have to replace them after doing so.
Lets just hope no more rain falls in the valley.

Corpse. It's the Corpse of Engineers. Didn't you see what they did with New Orleans?

The next 4 months will be interesting. The big crest usually doesn't hit until April or May. On the one hand, all that snow in the east that usually melts in the spring has fallen as rain and is coming down the river now instead of later. On the other, you have to watch for a continued wet winter-spring in the east, and what the snow situation in the Rockies and Plains will be like.
