Has anyone shed any light on the effect of the River in Baton Rouge this weekend? The amount of rain is definitely starting to make me wonder. Wife and I walked the levee in st. Gabriel on Sunday, and I would guess the water is about 6-8 feet from the top

It takes a shite ton of water to increase the river at its current height. Rainfall in BR is of no real concern for the river since the only way in is the tributaries or rain falling directly on the river.
Rainfall north of BR is of no immediate concern because of Morganza plus the fact the crest has come and gone in many areas already. New rain prolongs the flood event length, but it will need to be historic rain to increase the height.
ETA - I'm skipping some of the specifics of why that's the case, but hopefully you get the idea.

Funny you mention that. Many locations in the watershed are looking at two months worth of rainfall in just 7 days.

Thanks for the info, I appreciate it slackster. Makes me more at ease. My wife has seen the pics up north of the levee breaches and has been nervous

It's the Ohio that would swing the gauge heights significantly at this water level.

It's all about the volume of water and the watershed where the rain falls.
Imagine 1 inch of rain fell across all of Akransas - every square inch of the 53,179 square miles. The Mississippi River @ Vicksburg is currently draining that much water every 24 hours.
This chart of the Mississippi River in Illinois seems troublesome:

but then you realize that by the time the river widens out in New Madrid, it isn't nearly as severe:

and by the time that water catches up to the Arkansas River discharge near Arkansas City, it just prolongs the crest rather than truly increasing it.

I heard two interesting thoughts yesterday regarding the opening/delay of the opening (yes, trustworthy sources):
1. The delay can be at least partially attributed to our litigious society. If the trigger numbers (on paper) are not actually met by the river, and the Corp opens the gates and the land floods, an attorney will have a field day. (regardless of the flooded land being in a designated FLOODway)
2. the Corp will begin opening the gates if triggers are NOT met only when there is a threat to overtop the actual gates (bt gates and roadway). Should the water overtop the gates this is considered "uncontrolled" and that defeats the purpose of a "Control" structure.

Figures the damn lawyers and their predatory stance on literally everything would play a role in the ACE decision making while trying to prevent trillions of dollars in flood damage.

I RA'd for the sticky when the first announced the Morganza would be opened, figuring that the opening of the Morganza affects thousands of people and it would warrant a sticky.
Chicken and his minions have disagreed, though. I don't question their actions - I just act like a good little poster like I'm supposed to do.

Wake me up when the Control Structure fails. Otherwise...

You want a thread stickied for more than six months for something that is going to happen one day.
Yeah not going to happen.
It's not like people can't find the thread. Get your throng out of your crack and and the crack of your 2316547631 alters too.
