You hope. There’s a decent chance they end up in the GOM

Is there a photo out there of the Morganza structure currently? I'd like to see how close the water is to the top.

I think the implication is that the spillway would fail if overtopped (scouring, breakthrough, etc) and the river would permanently divert at this point.
Sounds like they cant operate the structure if it overtops, and that there is also a risk of failure of the structure, since it wasn't designed for overtopping. But, I dont think the risk of avulsion is that great if the Morganza structure fails.

Probably not as great as at ORCS. I don’t know for sure but I haven’t heard that the gradient is as steep.

Eh, the river already cuts in pretty close the the locks. Get water flowing unchecked through there fast enough to erode the levee from the back side and all kids of shite can happen.

This is from the 16th. Satellite photo so obviously you can't see how high the water is. But the field (forebay) between the structure and the river is completely flooded. Contrast to this: Google Maps

It's also not in an existing channel, and I doubt there would be enough concentrated flow to form a new one and cut all the way back to the existing channel before the river falls enough to take water off the structure area.
I hope that is the case anyway.

quote:f i remember correctly, the stop logs on morganza are wooden. If it comes to it, they could slowly destroy them to open bays. I hope it donesnt come to that.

So you should never share any info gathered during your profession in casual conversation, or even during times of potential peril? Sweet.

So the concern is overtopping a Morganza and not at the ORCS?

quote:sure i talk about this stuff to my friends all the time. This isnt casual conversation. but back to the topic that started all of this. It wasnt a good idea to "flood" areas in Arkansas to elevate the river here.
So you should never share any info gathered during your profession in casual conversation
1st you wouldnt get the land owners buy off.
2nd if there wasnt an actual floodway/reservoir there that water will just flow south and come back in the river after it destroys the communities along its path.
3rd say you want to build a floodway/reservoir. The amount of area you would need would be eminence and then you are talking about cost. Why build a new spillway structure and levees to contain, rent/buy all this land, when it would be better appropriated for upgrades to the existing structures.

Got to save that for when he turns it over to state or federal entity and their press releases.

So calling someone retarded, while giving absolutely 0 information is a good look?
I’m sorry, I’ll try to take TD more seriously in the future
