Baton rouge and esp. Ascension Parish remain in the early 1960s with their roads.
Still having to 4 lane major thoroughfares in this day and age.

One of the reasons for Ascension's roads being so shitty was that from 1998-2008, current Parish President, Tommy Martinez served on the state transportation board. Because he was planning a return to Ascension so he could resume being the Parish President, he purposefully made sure that little to no road improvement projects went through on state highways through the parish, so as to prevent the candidate he would be running against to be able to take credit for any road improvements.

This meant that as Ascension was starting to explode with growth, no roads were being built or improved to respond to that growth. Now, so much has been built up that it's nearly impossible to fix.

Thanks Tommy!

Landscaped medians are far more attractive than a suicide lane. There's not as much retail development on that side of Perkins as the area towards Bluebonnet, Essen, etc.

You have to be a visionary with your thinking. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that there'll be more retail & office businesses on Perkins in the near future. Like others have said, do it right the 1st time and scrap that stupid median.

The really stupid part was them saying that in addition to the median that there would be no turn lanes. It's as if they want to make it as clusterf&%ked as possible.

But construction on Perkins will not begin for a long time, possibly years.

What an absolute joke. That area of Perkins should have been 4+ lanes ten years ago.

The fact that it may not be expanded before 2020 is laughable.

The most frustrating things about projects like this and being in this industry is the constant pandering to the local uber minority that always has a problem with progress.

It takes years for these stupid meetings to take place, it takes millions of taxpayer dollars to fund these stupid meetings, and ultimately the improvements come years down the road from when this starts.

It's annoying and debilitating as a taxpayer and an engineer.

Why does it need to be widened in this area??? I don't get it. Lived off of pecue for a really long time and this hasn't been a problem.

It's a very busy road now, and all it takes is one idiot driving 10 to 15 mph under the speed limit to make it miserable for everyone on that side of the road.

Agreed. They also need to go ahead and widen the rest of Perkins to Airline, get that I-10 interchange at Picou, add another interchange at Bluff Road, 5-lane Jefferson from Airline to Bluff, 4 lane it from Bluff to River Road, and 5-lane Highway 30 from 44 to Jefferson, with 4 lanes (and turn lanes) all the way through Baton Rouge.

They also need turn lanes at Nicholson and Lee, 6 lanes on Airline all the way through BR to Gonzales, create at least one more overpass over I-10 between Essen and College (I would recommend Kennilworth), connect LSU Avenue to the back end of Jennifer Jean, expand Kennilworth to Burbank and Nicholson, expand Staring to Nicholson as well, build another bridge over the Amite at S. Harrels Ferry and/or George O'Neal (plus Hoo Shoo Too Road), and for god's sake, is a Southern Loop around Manchac Road to Plaquamine too damn much to ask for?

I'll be lucky if my kids see half of the stuff you described here. And I don't have kids yet.

Kennilworth doesn't intersect with I-10. In fact, Kennilworth ends about 3 miles from I-10.

expand Kennilworth to Burbank and Nicholson,
Been looked at several times. It would require relocating a church cemetery which apparently is extremely costly and legally bureaucratic involving notifying all the surviving family members of the persons buried there.

The newly opened Starring extension to Burbank is working well.

You are correct. The idea is to expand Kennilworth across Perkins to some of the open land behind the hospitals and have it go over the interstate and connect with Jefferson or Corporate. It could never hurt to have another road that allows one to get from Nicholson all the way over I-10/12

Will just make the CF that is Highland/Perkins/I-10 at 5PM more insane, IMO

No fricking shite. And if the Highland Exit from 10 is ever addressed(need a god damned flyover for drivers wanting to go north on Highland), there needs to be a Pecue exit/entrance ramp.

What if I told you that's being planned and some rich dude is trying to make sure he owns all the land up to Wards Creek before it gets approved so he can cash in. It's going to happen and it will go over the train tracks.

Shhhhh..

It won't happen. Just securing the rights of way through all of that commercial property from where Kennilworth ends now at Perkins to I-10 would be cost prohibitive. It also would not save much distance getting to I-10 since Kennilworth is less than a mile from Essen.

I don't see how that would be possible without going through a few of the houses that is located right next to the hospital area.

That sounds like every road expansion project ever...?

Just like when Black Bayou was dredged, a few feet inland on the far bank was still owned by the families that owned land on the opposite bank. However, when the bayou was dredged, extra footage was dredged off the far bank making sure that those familes' property ended in the water rather than right on the edge of the bank. The dirt was then piled up on that side creating high land on the water. Who owns it? One of the developers of the Diversion Canal. Brilliant. He now has water-front lots with a "natural" ridge just waiting for road access which is in progress.
